HERITAGE FOUNDATION: "How Modern Liberals Think" U-Tube
You-Tube ^ | March 5, 2007 | Evan Sayet (video)

This is a video of a 48-minute speech plus Q&A at Heritage Foundation by Evan Sayet, a former liberal. Very insightful in explaining the leftist mindset today.

"Libs may initially recoil, but this speech cannot help plant seeds in their minds, whether they will admit it or not."

My first thought after watching this presentation was to send it to my more liberal friends. My second thought was that they would not have the patience to sit through the talk without closing their minds or mashing the stop button.

I love his wife-hater analogy that illustrates how those on the left treat America.

Like his friend who really did hate his wife, the LEFT REALLY DOES HATE AMERICA.

Interesting take. I think I mostly agree other than him calling them Liberals or even 'Modern Liberals."

These people are the 60s leftists who were swallowed into the KGBs propaganda swamp, but on how they got to where they are, IMHO, he is right on the money.

This virus was not home grown. It was exported from Moscow.

Put this Evan Sayet speech together with this essay by Arthur Herman: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1805986/posts
and it presents quite a pattern of Leftist efforts to bring down Western Civilization. The French Left surrendered Algeria, then exported the design to John Kerry and the American Left for use on Vietnam, and now the design is used again to pre-emptively surrender to the Islamists.

I thought that this was a good distillation of a lot of though on this site. I would have like to ask him some questions like: 1. By mentioning the word success a number of times in his speech does he think that Democrats are not successful? Does he think that he will be successful as an Anne Coutler type speaker, a career along those lines? 2. Why does the Left have coolness attached to them? It was surprising to see that Evan has longish hair, maybe as a carry over of his liberal past, but why is the right stereotyped as staid, old, serious-minded, dour, men in suits (with tons of gravitas and wealth) and the left is loose, open-minded, easy going, generous, free living & accepting, eternally young, fun minded people? 3. Is Evan doing justice in description of the liberal mindset or are there any good qualities that redeem them? He says liberals are not evil but will always side with evil and the democrats are wrong on everything. Is this Stereotyping? Where does Joe Lieberman fit in? 4. What is his take on liberal hypocrisy, the limousine liberal? 5. Why should modern art conform to aesthetics, especially the aesthetic of the beautiful? Why not be exempt from older standards and try new approaches?

Overall the show was very good and I appreciate the reference to Bloom. I remember Bloom once said on a TV show that the American democratic mindset of tolerance was molded so that nobody becomes a fascist. In other words, tolerate everything but the intolerant, which gives rise to soft nihilism, relativism and the "God is dead and everything is permitted" point of view.

Even though the artists depend upon artistic ideals to define their life work, their objective is to pull those artistic ideals down around them.

That stems from the belief that everything is relative. If there are a handful of really great artists to whom nobody else can compare, then that means almost everyone, even those who would seek to learn from those artists, is inferior. But if that handful of great artists were destroyed, then everyone else would be much better by comparison.

The same relativism applies to certain moral issues like abortion. If someone has had an abortion and is feeling guilty about it, liberal moral relativism would suggest that the way to erase that guilt is to promote abortion so that many more people have one. In that way, one will no longer be worse than everyone else. Of course, trying to clear a healthy conscience in that way will never work--it will merely exacerbate the guilt--but the increasing guilt will lead to increasing desperation to get everyone to the same level.

The real turning point, IMHO, would be to wake up some people (those who have had abortions would be very good for this) to the fact that the way to clear one's conscience after having done something bad is to recognize that it was bad, and why it was bad, and to discourage others from following in one's footsteps. The message "Don't do as I did" is not hypocritical when delivered by someone who regrets his actions. If women who have had abortions were to start waking up to this, there could be a sea change on the issue that would wipe out the Democrats in only a few years.

A single 45 minute talk is going to be way too long to work on a liberal. Better is to try to ask questions, although cornering liberals won't do any good. Since their liberal beliefs are axiomatic, anything in the real world which would seem to contradict their belief must have some other explanation, even if it hasn't been discovered yet.

I watched this clip two times! I should make a list with bullet points on the insight and conclusions that Evan comes up with.

It is clearly apparent that Evan has thought carefully about what makes a Liberal think what he does. I don't think it would do any good to ask any of my Liberal friends to watch Evan's speech. Their thought process has made them immune to logic and it would bounce off of them like water off a duck's back.

IMHO Listening to Rush Monday and Tuesday (4/2/7 and 4/3/7), it appears to me that Rush also viewed this video clip over the weekend. Rush has come up with a number of Evan's talking points in his monologs both days. But it could be just convergent thought or insight.

As a smoker, being a social pariah cast out into the cold and rain, sometimes has its small bonuses. As my wife and I were laying over in Vegas last spring on the way home from Seoul, Evan scored a light from me, and we had thereby a delightful 20 minute conversation with him while he was in transit to DC to make this speech.
