Webb Denies He Gave Aide Gun That Led to Arrest

Tuesday , March 27, 2007

WASHINGTON — Virginia Sen. Jim Webb said Tuesday he did not give aide Phillip Thompson the gun that led to his arrest in a Senate office building. Webb did not say whether it was his gun.

Thompson is awaiting arraignment in D.C. Superior Court after being arrested Monday for trying to enter the Russell Senate Office Building, where Webb's office is located, carrying a loaded pistol and two fully loaded magazines.

The judge will determine whether Thompson, 45, will have to pay bail to get out of jail, and will set a date for a preliminary hearing. Thompson spent the night in a D.C. jail after U.S. Capitol Police determined Monday that he did not have a permit to carry a gun in Washington, D.C., where only law enforcement officials are allowed to carry handguns.

He is charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. According to the court docket, Monday was Thompson's birthday.

A senior Democratic aide said Monday evening that Thompson forgot that he had the weapon when he sent the senator's bag through the X-ray machine at the office building. The aide said Webb gave the bag that contained the gun to Thompson when the aide drove the senator to the airport.

Webb said he has been in New Orleans since Friday and returned Monday night. He denied that he gave the weapon to Thompson.

A mistake is misplacing your keys. Not your handgun.

Yup. I guess it could be a 'mistake' if you misplace your car, but if the place you forgot you parked it was a no-parking zone, you still get towed and pay fines.

Not in D.C. besides you cannot carry a gun into any federal building. The law is very clear on this point.

.9 millimeter? I have mechanical pencils in that size. Perhaps you mean 9. millimeter. But with that 'all a lie' disclaimer I really am left with no idea what you were talking about and what your point was.

Who's he protecting himself from - fellow screwball Jim Moran who has already beat his wife, beat an 8-year-old, and threatened to beat another congressman?

And somebody better check that Moran is not carrying a gun also.

This poor sucker Thompson was the klutz that carried Webb's smelly combat boots around all during the campaign so he could put them on at every stop.

Possibly heading to SCOTUS as far as DC gun ban. Agreed that the aide can't carry in federal building but senators can.

I always make that mistake with the 9 millimeter. Isn't it a .357? Here's what I'm talking about and the point I was making is we can and do carry whenever we want in AZ.

"If you want a nuke and you can afford it, it's up to you. If you want a suface to air missile or a tank and you can afford it, it's up to you.
If you use them, against other human beings, that's against the law."

Well, your interpretation of the 2nd Amendment is certainly absolutist.
I think it turns the Constitution into a suicide pact.

Personal WMD...trucks full of ammonium nitrate...you name it: all protected by the Constitution, until you use them.

There's usually a murder-suicide in every major city every year. Guess that won't happen any more!

The Constitution allows freedom of worship and that includes allowing islam terror supportors to preach in their mosques, it allows neo-nazis to march in parades, it also allows media to lie and politicians to speak treason. All of that is far more dangerous to us than citizens carrying weapons. How did the DC law protect Ronald Regan from near assassination? Why does a hotel on Capital hill warn its guests that they walk and jog at night at their own risk. A notice that I have never seen in any other place that I have visited (i have not been to detroit)

Just how do you imagine that everyone would have a nuke? Why not a M1A1, or a 155 howitzer. The nuke argument is a bit Gorelike.

"Yes, we do. We'll finally get a government that we can trust......."

If the Secret Service cannot prevent people from approaching the President with guns, we will go through a lot of Presidents is what will happen.

Anybody who thinks about it knows it.

There have to be limits on weapons, just as on any other right. Any right that is absolutely unlimited will destroy civilization, because any right that is an absolute shield against law will become the shield behind which lawlessness will grow unchecked. Look at how the absolutist idea of "national soveriegnty" has allowed places like Afghanistan, the Sudan, Iran and North Korea grow unchecked into murderous havens of monsters.

NO restrictions on weapons ownership or carrying means cheap WMD and a lot of destruction.

Just how stupid do you have to be to think you can waltz into the capitol building with a firearm and get stopped?

Hi basil!

You quoted the article as stating "But Webb did not shoot down rumors...", but what I read leaves out the 'not'. Did FOX change the article?

This is really confusing because the very next paragraph makes it seem as if Webb is admitting to 'carrying' in the Capitol! "Since 9/11 for people who are in government I think in general there has been an agreement that it's a more dangerous time.

He NEVER denies bringing the handgun to work.

I'm just curious...because I have not heard anyone mention this:

How does someone get a conceal and carry permit for an unregistered weapon? Isn't the permit specific as to the type of weapon allowed if not the specific weapon? Are the CC permits that vague that someone could carry a concealed bazooka (ridiculous example but...) if they so desired. Was this gun a semi-auto or a fully auto? I have to assume one or the other because of the extra clips. How many total rounds was this clown trying to get into the capitol? I certainly don't blame Webb for wanting to protect himself or his family in Virginia or anywhere else he may have to travel (it's a crazy world out there). However, he brings in a loaded weapon and two loaded clips that account for 30 - 45 rounds into the capitol building (one of the most secure areas in DC, besides the White House that is)?? That's some serious firepower! If I were the Capitol Hill Police, I would keep an eye on Webb since he cannot be trusted to even tell the truth about his own weapon. Could it be that he's trying to cover up the fact that he owns an unregistered weapon? There are just too many unanswered questions.

My .02

All this restrictions are unconstitutional in any case. He did nothing wrong.

Maybe but the thought of Jim Webb with a gun is not going to help the second amendment cause.

I'm a bit confused here.  If he didn't give his gun to his aide, is he saying that he doesn't keep a loaded weapon secure?
