USA Today and Gallup offer their latest in polling for both parties in the extended presidential primary race, and a couple of changes have raised eyebrows. First, even the rumor of a bid by Fred Thompson has dented Rudy Giuliani's momentum, while John McCain's decline in support appears to have leveled off:
"On the Republican side, former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson shook up the field with his announcement that he would consider getting into the presidential race. Thompson is familiar as the actor who plays District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's Law and Order. Chosen by 12% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters, Thompson is third in the Republican field. He trails former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, at 31%, and Arizona Sen. John McCain, at 22%. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich is at 8%."
"Thompson's support seems to come largely from voters who had supported Giuliani. In the USA TODAY poll taken March 2-4, Giuliani's standing had been 13 percentage points higher, at 44%. McCain's support had been 2 points lower then."
"What does this mean? Conservatives who have supported Giuliani for his leadership and electability -- and plenty of them have -- would desert Rudy if a credible, consistent conservative entered the race... Thompson['s]... eight years in the Senate have left a more credible sense of consistency and center-right politics than Giuliani brings to the race. And according to the Post's blog The Sleuth, Thompson has begun seriously considering a run -- and has met with GOP powerhouse advisor Ed Gillespie."

Romney fared poorly in this poll... That has to be disappointing, especially since Hugh Hewitt's political biography and Romney's appearance at CPAC should have set the stage for a significant boost. Has Thompson's potential disrupted Romney's momentum as well? Possibly.

In all fairness, from my observation, the vast majority of the "Rudybots" have no problem whatsoever with Thompson. It's just a very vocal minority of them who are trying to sabotage him.
People like me, too. At the beginning of 2007, I was solidly in Rudy's camp, but I backed off over time. Fred has my vote if he runs.

Personally, at the moment, I am supportive Romney as I believe that he is the right-most candidate with a chance. That said, I think if Thompson declares, then by that standard, he will immediately become the right-most candidate with a chance.
Sounds like we will perhaps both be Fred fans, if the opportunity presents itself.
So you are actually saying that Hillary is putting Thompson into play, she has secretly come to him and asked/forced him to do her bidding...

I don't think they would, as the ratings of the re-runs would soar after the election, regardless of whether Fred wins or not.

Rudy also supported CFR. And has two divorces. But that doesn't stop you from supporting Rudy.
And those are relatively minor concerns of mine regarding Rudy. His pro-abort, pro-gun-control, pro-sanctuary-city, defiance of laws and court orders, and pro-global warming is far mor alarming - all baggage that isn't in Fred's political duffle bag.
I am only upset at all the negative comments about the President. He's been steadfast. He just keeps on keeping on. If he allowed the spenders to get their way, it also kept the money coming for the war.
Now we have the unappeasables to thank for the added burden for our President and our troops.
I love Rudy. We were the benficiary of his leadership in NY.......before 9/11! All those eight years before when he just kept on doing the right thing. Rarely fought back, simply did what had to be done while the media eviscerated him at every turn.
I think he has the guts to do it all again.

If I were a scumbag, I'd be a Rudy supporter. I am neither.
And in Fred's duffle bag is that he played a President on TV.

I'll take his conservvative lifetime ratings in the Senate, along with his long legal work, over Rudy's liberal record.

Welcome to Bizarro world. I got called a liberal because I think Rudy is too liberal. Doesn't make sense, but then again, neither does supporting Rudy, so they have to do what they can to discredit any opposition with any brand of argument they can come up with.

I haven't followed the bruins in many years. I live fairly near to NYC, and the coverage sucks.
You note that you're all for Rudy, etc., then you don't like the fact that Freepers are trashing him. You DO know that FreeRepublic is a board for political conservatives, don't you? Don't you? I guess not.
