BAGHDAD - Leaders of a car-bombing ring believed responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Iraqis in the Shiite Sadr City enclave and elsewhere in Baghdad have been captured, the U.S. military said on Monday.
The suspected bombers were rounded up last week by American forces during continuing security sweeps in Azamiyah, the Sunni stronghold in northern Baghdad, the military statement said.
The U.S. command said one of the detained men, Haitham al-Shimari, was suspected in the "planning and execution of the majority of car bombs which have killed hundreds of Iraqi citizens in Sadr City."
The reported "second-in-command" of the Azamiyah-based cell, Haidar al-Jafar, was arrested the same day. The military said that group had "killed approximately 900 innocent Iraqi citizens" and wounded 1,950.
Three other men believed connected to the bombing cell also were in custody, the military said.

Ahmed Farhan Hassan has been captured. This operative is described as a senior aide to Abu Omar al-Baghdadi the leader of al-Qaedas so-called Islamic State in Iraq. That would make him a reasonably big fish, one from which, it would seem, good intelligence can be extracted.
Local Iraqi TV aired recorded confessions of Ahmed Farhan Hassan. Hassan, who was captured in Abu Ghraib west of Baghdad a few days ago, spoke about his connection to al-Baghdadai, and Im paraphrasing: I have four emirs operating under my command. I receive money directly from Abu Omar and then I distribute it among the members of my units according to the number and size of operations they carry out.
Quoting Iraqi military officials, the TV report added that Hassan admitted to have been responsible for some 300 murders and about 200 kidnapping incidents since he joined al-Qaeda three years ago.

Well here is a time I am solidly for a summary execution at a military firing squad.
I've got mixed feelings on this one..
The way I read the story -- these Sunnis were killing ONLY Shiite followers of Al Sadr...
Can that be such a bad thing?
Are these not the same folks that have been rounding up and killing Sunnis as a act of revenge?
Hell, so long as they're killing ONLY one another --- and both combatants are murderous anti Coalition militia --- let them have at it...
Semper Fi
democrats deeply saddened
Bush's fault.
I like your thinking.
It is long term and I believe that ultimately Bush is serving history rather then the short term needs now.
Not an easy or popular thing to do, and quite the opposite of someone like Clinton or what the MSM screams for.
Frustrating at times, not without mistakes, but the long suffering will pay off with a much freer and safer world.
GREAT JOB!!!
I agree; and find your assessment so refreshing, and correct.
I want to do more than just get goose bumps on my skin when I see our Flag or hear our National anthem... All I can do now is thank servicemen and women when I see them and remind them that they are making the World a better place. I guess "cheerleaders" are important too, but...
I believe in what our President is trying to accomplish. I understand the bigger picture for World safety and I love this Country so very much.
Nah, I favor sticking several sticks of tnt up their anal orifices on a delayed fuse. Punishment fit the crime. Poetic justice.
Time for the Pershing firing squad.

Yes, it can. Our objective in Iraq is to leave a stable country in which all members have access to the rule of law, representation of their interests and concerns, and the right to own property. All people on both sides who carry out vigilante vendettas and vituperative violence stand in the way of that objective.
The Left Wing makes the fundamental mistake of feeling instead of thinking, because feeling is so powerful and gratifying. Don't make the same mistake. Play more chess; think things through, and remember your purpose.
Seal off the city and hand them over to the relatives of the victims.
Blackwater.
We would be better advised to achieve that HERE in America, and protect what we do have from the encroachments on OUR Culture, Language and Sovereignty.
To achieve what you suggest is our goal in an Islamic republic that has NEVER known Democracy or provided human rights as a matter of course -- is a fool's errand, without FIRST destroying MOST of what currently exists and defeating whatever remains... We're not playing chess..... MY PURPOSE, is to insure the survival of OUR culture and MY grandchildren... Semper Fi
Right put a tracking mechanism secretly ((IN)) him and let him go..
