Board member releases teacher’s powerpoint presentation; says it was a “calculated decision on his part to bend young minds”

Kris Helphinstine, a part-time biology teacher at Sisters High School was fired by the school board Monday night for deviating from the curriculum on the theory of evolution after only eight days on the job, four of which were spent teaching his own theories of evolution through a PowerPoint presentation that referenced Nazi Germany and Planned Parenthood.

When asked why Helphinstine was dismissed, school board chairman Mike Gould said, “He lacked judgment in departing from the district science curriculum in a very controversial subject area and this departure occurred without any consultation or without an appropriate supervisor. This is a sensitive area. When teachers teach in certain areas, they have to teach it straight down the line.”

Helphinstine’s PowerPoint presentation displayed the following quote from a leading British evolutionist who is commonly referenced by Creationists. “The theory of evolution (is) a theory universally accepted not because it can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true but because the only alternative, special creation, is clearly incredible.” (D.M.S. Watson, “Adaptation,” Nature, Vol. 123 [sic Vol. 124] (1929), p. 233).

“He taught that evolution doesn’t exist,” said seven-year board member Glen Lasken. “Of course we want our students to think, but this went beyond that. He spent four days dismantling the theory of evolution for these kids. He was terminated for a gross error in judgment, without checking with the superintendent or principal. This was an extreme error in judgment.”

In a phone interview, 27-year old Helphinstine said that his whole purpose was to promote critical thinking. “Eugenics, the self directed evolution of mankind is an interesting subject. Every teacher brings in supplemental material. What is standard curriculum?” asked Helphinstine who has a master’s degree in science from Oregon State University.

The PowerPoint presentation included photos of dead bodies taken during the Holocaust and referenced a 1941 article printed in The Journal of American Psychiatric Association calling for the killing of mentally retarded children, referred to as “natures mistakes”.

“He was trying to make the point that not only is evolution wrong; he suggested that evolution is used for bad purposes. Evolution was used as an experimental basis in Nazi Germany. He said the founding fathers of Planned Parenthood are Nazis. His PowerPoint presentation of the Holocaust is pretty revolting stuff. What is most discouraging is that he says he was trying to encourage critical thinking. This was a calculated decision on his part to bend young minds,” says Lasken.

Board members met with Helphinstine in private for approximately 90 minutes before a public meeting on the matter, though the teacher did not stay for the public forum.

“Mr. Helphinstine was dismissed for failing to teach science in a freshman biology class. He didn’t expressly teach Creationism but provided significant messages from advocacy groups in his presentation. The materials he submitted were not age appropriate,” said board member Jeff Smith.

Total Privatization of all schooling is the only moral choice.

In my state our new governor, Ted Strickland-D, has made it one of his top priorities to defund and close down all of the voucher or charter schools.

Even the local liberal paper has realized that he is only paying back the teachers union that supported his campaign, and called him on it.

Any teacher who introduces ID into the classroom should be fired at any reputable institution. If the Xians want to teach this BS, they can do so in their own private schools or homeschools. I believe, BTW, that EVERYONE should avoid public schooling at all costs.

Junk science is junk science, whether its from the piehole of Al Gore or Ken Hovind.

OK, I watched the slideshow. There is nothing, remotely, about Creationism in it. He only talks about how Darwinism encouraged the belief in, and practice of, eugenics. There is absolutely no falsehood in the thing. He DOES take a swipe at the sainted Margaret Sanger, and that is probably what got him fired.

He only talks about how Darwinism encouraged the belief in, and practice of, eugenics. There is absolutely no falsehood in the thing.

You're talking about the first slide show. Perhaps what you say is true (my sense is that it's exagerated), but then then content belongs in a history class, not a biology class.

The point being made was where the Nazis got some of their ideas. The Nazis got lots of ideas from Margaret Sanger.

The Catholic schools teach evolution. They also teach creationism. They are not mutually exclusive. I do resent spending $16,000/year in tuition for 2 children and then this city paying $13,000/year PER Child (my tax dollars at work) for the schools to teach sex ed courses DESIGNED by Planned Parenthood. Hmmmmmm...I may see an infringement of my religion....(but since it's not pork or a head scarf...)

the funny thing is that they assume so quickly this guy was being ridiculous by saying such things about planned parenthood.

Clearly he did his homework concerning Margaret Sanger, and they did not.

She admired Hitler - she admired the eugenics movement - and she sought to promote abortion among the poor minorities but not among the wealthy whites.

This was an organization born in racism - not in "women's rights"

Darwinism doesn't come to any conclusions, nor make any predictions about the origin of life, other than that it almost certainly only happened once. It is not a Darwinist position to conclude that it happened entirely by chance. It is an atheist position, yes, but while all Atheists are Darwinists, not all Darwinists are Atheists.

This is not actually a 'scientific fact'. While it is probable that a small derivation in the orbit of the earth itself -either closer to, or farther away from the sun- would make life on earth as we know it nearly impossible, that doesn't rule out the possibility of other kinds of life arising on earth. Also, while it has been theorized that the gravitational presence of Jupiter has helped to draw away potentially dangerous comets and asteroids, the positions of the other planets have little to no influence on life on earth (except when Mercury goes retrograde, which causes people to misplace things).

Current estimates place the number of galaxies in the Universe at 125 billion and the number of stars at seventy-sextillion (70 000 000 000 000 000 000 000). In other words: if the odds against the exact configuration of our solar system happening were five-hundred trillion to one it could still be expected to occur one hundred and forty million times.

Like I said, I would love to sit through his lecture. The best part about this thread is that I have to write a paper on the impact Western Civilization since the 1600's has made on today's world.

I had planned on showing how Louis XIV said that his people were too stupid to rule themselves and how the French people have spent the past 400 years proving him right...I think instead I am going to try to track down this teacher's e-mail address and write it over Darwin-Hitler- and planned parenthood and how we have learned nothing.

correct.
If memory serves me correctly - I am going by what my biology teacher told us many many years ago - that Darwin was not attempting to explain the origins of life, only how life evolves over time.

Our highschool biology teacher credited someone else with attempting to explain the origins of life with some experiment with electricity and certain chemicals.

Our teacher, however, was presenting the material as a "history" of the theory - and not necessarily telling us this IS how it happened - because, of course, no one knows how it happened.

I personally don't see why any of it needs to be discussed at great length in the classroom.
Do I care if my doctor who took all the required science classes believes in God? no
Do I care if he doesn't? no

What USEFUL skills or knowledge does any of this produce in students other than to sneer and argue with each other?

Maybe some of them will go on to anthropology and evolutionary science - but they can pursue those courses in college on their own.

Highschool requires basic knowledge of the sciences - and arguing about the origins of the world is not a basic skill.

It has been urged by some writers, as an important distinction, that with man the young arrive at maturity at a much later age than with any other animal: but if we look to the races of mankind which inhabit tropical countries the difference is not great, for the orang is believed not to be adult till the age of from ten to fifteen years.*(3)

But the sense of smell is of extremely slight service, if any, even to the dark coloured races of men, in whom it is much more highly developed than in the white and civilised races.* Nevertheless it does not warn them of danger, nor guide them to their food; nor does it prevent the Esquimaux from sleeping in the most fetid atmosphere, nor many savages from eating half-putrid meat.

It appears as if the posterior molar or wisdom-teeth were tending to become rudimentary in the more civilised races of man...In the Melanian races, on the other hand, the wisdom-teeth are usually furnished with three separate fangs, and are generally sound; they also differ from the other molars in size, less than in the Caucasian races.

It is an interesting fact that ancient races, in this and several other cases, more frequently present structures which resemble those of the lower animals than do the modern. One chief cause seems to be that the ancient races stand somewhat nearer in the long line of descent to their remote animal-like progenitors.

Article III. Sterilization may also be recommended by: (1.) the official physician (2.) the official in charge of a hospital, sanitarium, or prison.

Article IV. The request for sterilization must be presented in writing to, or placed in writing by the office of the Health Inheritance Court. The statement concerning the request must be certified by a medical document or authenticated in some other way. The business office of the court must notify the official physician. Article VII. The proceedings of the Health Inheritance Court are secret.

Article X. The Supreme Health Insurance Court retains final jurisdiction.

Both sexes ought to refrain from marriage if they are in any marked degree inferior in body or mind; but such hopes are Utopian and will never be even partially realised until the laws of inheritance are thoroughly known. Once Darwin established evolution via natural selection as "fact", and applied this "science" to humans, the scientific justification for a host of horrors, perpetrated by the stronger on the weaker, could be logically made.

Hitler, taking Darwin's views to their logical conclusion, was only building upon Darwin's blueprint. This is indisputable.

Finally, as to the argument that the teacher's recounting of this material didn't belong in a science class, the truth - equally indisputable - is that neither does Darwin, based on the faulty observations and reasoning upon which he founded his theories; theories which - in essence - were taken largely from Thomas Malthus:

It is certainly true that the productivity of the soil can be increased within certain limits; but only within defined limits and not indefinitely. By increasing the productive powers of the soil it will be possible to balance the effect of a surplus birth-rate in Germany for a certain period of time, without running any danger of hunger. But we have to face the fact that the general standard of living is rising more quickly than even the birth rate. The requirements of food and clothing are becoming greater from year to year and are out of proportion to those of our ancestors of, let us say, a hundred years ago. It would, therefore, be a mistaken view that every increase in the productive powers of the soil will supply the requisite conditions for an increase in the population. No. That is true up to a certain point only, for at least a portion of the increased produce of the soil will be consumed by the margin of increased demands caused by the steady rise in the standard of living. But even if these demands were to be curtailed to the narrowest limits possible and if at the same time we were to use all our available energies in the intenser cultivation, we should here reach a definite limit which is conditioned by the inherent nature of the soil itself. No matter how industriously we may labour we cannot increase agricultural production beyond this limit. Therefore, though we may postpone the evil hour of distress for a certain time, it will arrive at last. The first phenomenon will be the recurrence of famine periods from time to time, after bad harvests, etc. The intervals between these famines will become shorter and shorter the more the population increases; and, finally, the famine times will disappear only in those rare years of plenty when the granaries are full.

And a time will ultimately come when even in those years of plenty there will not be enough to go round; so that hunger will dog the footsteps of the nation. Nature must now step in once more and select those who are to survive, or else man will help himself by artificially preventing his own increase, with all the fatal consequences for the race and the species which have been already mentioned. It may be objected here that, in one form or another, this future is in store for all mankind and that the individual nation or race cannot escape the general fate.

The day will certainly come when the whole of mankind will be forced to check the augmentation of the human species, because there will be no further possibility of adjusting the productivity of the soil to the perpetual increase in the population. Nature must then be allowed to use her own methods or man may possibly take the task of regulation into his own hands and establish the necessary equilibrium by the application of better means than we have at our disposal to-day. But then it will be a problem for mankind as a whole, whereas now only those races have to suffer from want which no longer have the strength and daring to acquire sufficient soil to fulfil their needs. For, as things stand to-day, vast spaces still lie uncultivated all over the surface of the globe. Those spaces are only waiting for the ploughshare. And it is quite certain that Nature did not set those territories apart as the exclusive pastures of any one nation or race to be held unutilized in reserve for the future. Such land awaits the people who have the strength to acquire it and the diligence to cultivate it.

Nature knows no political frontiers. She begins by establishing life on this globe and then watches the free play of forces. Those who show the greatest courage and industry are the children nearest to her heart and they will be granted the sovereign right of existence.

A time will come, even though in the distant future, when there can be only two alternatives: Either the world will be ruled according to our modern concept of democracy, and then every decision will be in favour of the numerically stronger races; or the world will be governed by the law of natural distribution of power, and then those nations will be victorious who are of more brutal will and are not the nations who have practised self-denial.

Nobody can doubt that this world will one day be the scene of dreadful struggles for existence on the part of mankind. In the end the instinct of self-preservation alone will triumph. Before its consuming fire this so-called humanitarianism, which connotes only a mixture of fatuous timidity and self-conceit, will melt away as under the March sunshine. Man has become great through perpetual struggle. In perpetual peace his greatness must decline.

As you can see, Hitler had so bought into Darwinian thoughts on natural selection and the struggle for existence, and on Malthus' ideas of unsustainable population growth, he founded his entire ideological and political agenda around them.

Again, these facts are indisputable.
