As mountain lions move closer to urban areas, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is proposing a pilot project to teach the cougars a lesson about humans and habitat: the DOW recommends using hazing techniques to lower the animals comfort level around people.

If approved, the Front Range Cougar Pilot Project would be implemented in two phases in Boulder and Jefferson Counties.

First, wildlife officials would trap six cougars in the corridor between Lyons and Interstate 70. Those cougars would be collared with GPS tracking devices. The movement of the mountain lion would be recorded eight times a day.

The second phase of the project calls for hazing the big cats ...

For a minute there, I thought that this was going to be a remarkably different story...

Hazing techniques? With Cougars? Yeah, taunting cougars is a brilliant idea.

Doable. A hot element on the end of the stick works even on bigger cats. Causing burns, though, is not particularly ethical.

Sadly the new city people are taking over Colorado.

They know little about hunting or wildlife management...the DOW is a reflection of the mess.

Always carry when I am hiking in the foothills. Rules be damned. Put it in my backpack and out of sight. But it is handy, just in case.

Have seen black bear tracks and scat. I am probably not at any risk, but I am not going to take any chances.

Besides, there are human "animals" on the trails, too.

I wonder how many other folks had the same initial reaction.

Good planning.

The populations of bears and mountain lions are growing fast. Wolves are being introduced...

Not so much an "expected story" as much as an initial reaction to the double entendre of the headline. When I first saw it, I chuckled, but I very quickly knew that the story was about big cats.

Well, "Cougar" is recent slang that erefers to an older woman (chiefly middle-aged) who seeks, shall we say, intimacy with significantly younger men.

If we are still talking of the Big Cats, then I do not think that there are that many sub-varieties. I could be wrong, but I have only read of a couple of different types in the US.

As for the other Cougar, I have heard of there being than many types.
