You must meet life's chalenges with actions, not tears.

"Snowy Footprints", by PEG

Here's the tale.

Mouse came out of his house one day. He saw the ground covered with snow and he began to cry.

Fox would see his footprints in the snow and he would follow him. Surely Fox would catch him.

Mouse cried some more.

Rabbit came out of his hole that day. He saw Mouse crying.

"Why are you crying, Mouse?" he asked.

Mouse said, "Fox will follow my footprints in the snow. He will chase and catch me."

"No," said Rabbit. "I will hop along behind you and brush the snow over your footprints. Fox will never catch you."

Rabbit covered Mouse's footprints. Mouse was happy.

Rabbit looked behind him to see if Fox was coming. Rabbit began to cry.

Squirrel came down from his tree that day. He saw Rabbit crying.

"Why are you crying, Rabbit?" he asked.

Rabbit said, "I covered Mouse's footprints in the snow so Fox would not catch him. Now my footprints are in the snow. Fox will surely catch me."

"Don't cry, Rabbit," said Squirrel, I will brush the snow over your footprints. Fox will not be able to find you." Rabbit was happy.

Squirrel looked behind him to see if fox was coming. He began to cry.

Racoon came out of his bush that day. He saw Squirrel crying.

"Why are you crying, Squirrel?" he asked.

"I hopped behind Rabbit and covered his footprints with snow so Fox wouldn't catch him," said Squirrel. "Now, my footprints are in the snow. Fox will surely catch me."

"I will cover your footprints with snow," said Racoon. "Fox will not be able to catch you." Squirrel was happy.

Racoon looked behind him to see if Fox was coming. He began to holler. Fox was following his footprints in the snow. Surely he would catch him.

Racoon began to run. Fox chased Racoon all over the meadow until he heard a noise behind him. Fox and racoon stopped and looked behind them. They both began to cry.

There was Bear coming out of the woods. Surely he would catch them.

Bear was hollering at them. "Wait, Fox. Wait, Racoon. Wait Squirrel and Rabbit. Wait Mouse. It's such a beautiful, snowy day." said Bear. "Let's all get together and build a snowman."

Bear, and Fox, and Racoon, and Squirrel, and Rabbit, and Mouse gathered in the meadow and began to build a snowman.

Bear and Raccon rolled three snowballs for the snowman's body.

Fox and Squirrel gathered sticks for the snowman's arms.

Rabbit found an old, dried carrot for the snowman's nose.

Mouse gathered nuts for the snowman's eyes and teeth.

When the snowman was finished they danced in a circle around him. They sang and laughed, and were happy to see the snowman they had made together.

No one cried any more that day.

And, that's the end.

Remember to look behind you when you walk in the snow. You may not see Mouse, or Rabbit, or Squirrel, or Racoon, or Fox, or Bear, but you will see your own footprints.
