CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Reuters) - Democrat John Edwards said on Thursday he will continue his campaign for the White House even though his wife Elizabeth has suffered an incurable recurrence of the cancer that struck her in 2004.
"The campaign goes on. The campaign goes on strongly," Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina and the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee, said at a news conference in his hometown with Elizabeth at his side.
"The bottom line is her cancer is back. We are very optimistic about this because, having been through some struggles together in the past, we know, the key is to keep your head up," he said.
Some Democrats had indicated Edwards would at least suspend campaign activities while the couple dealt with the cancer, but Edwards said he would head out on a campaign trip on Friday.
"Both of us are committed to the cause, we're committed to changing this country that we love so much and we have no intention of cowering in the corner," Edwards said....."

Having watched others go through this (most likely) horrible time, I want to be charitable and agree with you. Anything else would be sort of a 'death watch'.
My God ease all their pains.
It would be a great thing if all three of them limp into the Rat convention with roughly a third of the delegates. Rather than having the Rat race be over with by mid February, leaving nearly nine months for the leader to campaign as presumptive nominee, the eventual nominee will have only a few months to rally support, and deal with the other two-thirds of Rat voters who feel disenfranchised by the eventual selection.
Pop some corn, it's getting interesting...
With metastatic Stage 4 cancer, I pray for a miracle for this woman.
I join you in prayer for Elizabeth Edwards. She's facing a frightening uphill battle against terrible odds.
No comment on John Edwards. We already know he's lower than dirt.
Mrs. Edwards does not seem prepared to face the challenge she is about to endure.
Both need some kind of "grounding" in what is or what is not important.
I'm with you.
When my father was dying of cancer, he insisted that everyone around him continue life normally. Same thing with a friend of mine whose mother had the disease.
This cynical garbage I'm reading on this thread makes me sigh. You don't like the man's politics. Great. That doesn't mean you have to spew such filth.
John Edwards on the other hand needs to eat poo and die...get a grip you ambulace-chasing-snake-oil-salesman egomaniac, you will never be elected. Do the right thing, call it quits and stay home and look after your wife and kids through this more important time in their lives...you dick.
Yep! VERY un freakin, and it ain't gonna go well with folk either! HOW stupidly insensitive of the jerk!! Just you watch the slime slither outta this one real quick!!
Anti-Bubba182, your comment was inappropriate and uncalled for. Thanks for showing conservatives' true colors. Your attitude cost you Congress last year and will cost you the White House next year.
Is that a fact you loathsome humanoid troll? Edwards would pimp anything to his advantage, not that anything will turn him into a frontrunner.
I agree with you. As much as I am unimpressed with him, I can understand why he would stay in the race. I don't think anyone who loves someone, would want them to hover around them dealing with such a disease, on a neverending basis. I think that normal, everyday life is what gets people through hard, dark times. Sometimes it is exactly what gets them through, Edwards is basically running for a job, albeit, a huge job, but if my husband stopped looking for a job, or working as normal, I think that would depress me even more than my illness.
I thought they LOOKED stunned. My Dad was on the receiving end of a cancer diagnosis that included the word "incurable" at the age of 62. It is a surreal experience.
I think if Clinton would focus group test possible vacation spots while President back in the 1990's - there is reason to suspect that the Edwards' accepted some input from campaign consultants on the way this was handled.

Maybe if he hadn't established a decade-long record of lying through his teeth, misleading his constituents, and using the people of North Carolina as a stepping stone for his own ambition...
I would not doubt that.
Its all part of his strategy. He is way behind in the polls. I feel sorry for his wife and hope she can lead a long happy life and put up a good fight against the disease.
Maybe they'll make a movie about it. Oops! they already did! The American President
Cowering in the corner is not the same as spending quality time with one's dying spouse. Talk about misplaced priorities.
