'Freedom Is About Authority': Excerpts From Giuliani Speech on Crime
New York Times ^ | March 22, 2007

Posted on 03/22/2007 11:28:22 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

...We constantly present the false impression that government can solve problems that government in America was designed not to solve. Families are significantly less important in the development of children today than they were 30 or 40 years ago. Religion has less influence than it did 30 or 40 years ago. Communities don't mean what they meant 30 or 40 years ago.

As Americans, we're not sure we share values. We're sometimes even afraid to use the word values. We talk about teaching ethics in schools -- people say, "What ethics? Whose ethics? Maybe we can't." And they confuse that with teaching of religion. And we are afraid to reaffirm the basics upon which a lawful and a decent society are based. We're almost embarrassed by it.

.... What we don't see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

... The fact is that we're fooling people if we suggest to them the solutions to these very, very deep-seated problems are going to be found in government.

... They are going to have to be just as solid and just as strong in teaching every single youngster their responsibility for citizenship. We're going to find the answer when schools once again train citizens. Schools exist in America and have always existed to train responsible citizens of the United States of America.

If they don't do that, it's very hard to hold us together as a country, because it's shared values that hold us together.

"A lot worse has been posted to me over the years and I never asked for a poster to be banned."

Banning is up to the mods. The report abuse button is their to do just that - report abuse. She had her time out and came back and immediately violated the conduct code by attacking another poster on her profile page. She didn't seem to get the message from the first suspension.

From the beginning of this thread she came in on the offensive against other posters - going after them with petty attacks instead of the subject of the thread or addressing the merits of their actual comments. From the start, without anyone addressing her first - it was attack, attack, attack.

You commended her for all this - your hat was off to her, you said. Then you repeatedly ping the Robinson's with things like "Is this Free Republic? It's not the one I joined so many years ago." when people go after your posts or your candidate. There's a little bit of a disconnect there if you're complaining about people being 'uncivil' towards you and then praising someone who was repeatedly violating the guidelines of this site.

I very seldom see any liberals on this forum. Lately, however, I do see a lot of people terrified that a good man like Rudy Giuliani might get the GOP nod. And a lot of these people show their fear by getting really snippy with other freepers.

A good man he maybe

But I personally will not support Rudy, either in the primaries, or if he wins that, the General. I will simply not cast a vote for POTUS.

The only good thing I can see personally about Guiliani is his stance on the current threat posed by terrorists.

But couch that with his stand on illegal aliens and that wipes out his alleged support of the war on terror.

Our borders are one of our lines of defense. You cannot surrender them and leave them open and then turn around and claim you are serious about the security of our Nation.

This and other issues makes him no better than Hillary/John Edwards/Ted Kennedy or John Murtha.

In my opinion of course.

What IS your problem? The poster's page CLEARLY says banned or suspended and he/she/it is not supposed to be able to post.

Everything isn't about YOU.

Her FR "about" page had a diatribe on it calling Fierce Allegiance a Racist.

Fierce Allegiance. She called him a racist.

I have it saved, for future reference.

Outside of this thread, Cincinatus' Wife has been a very nice poster. Yeah, I'd defend bigtime were if not for this thread.

I do believe today is just a bad day for her. She'll normalize soon I hope.

Rudy may no longer be a devout Catholic, but his worldview is very similar to the communitarian "order" preached by the Church historically, and followed by blue collar types in the NYC area. I'll trust Anglo Saxon Classical Liberalism (the ideology of the founding fathers) over the Eurostatism of Giuliani anyday of the week.

Me, saying I am racist. I am African American, and she claimed I was being racist because she had black people on her page.

It read "FR Poster "Fierce Allegiance" is a racist. After viewing my page and not liking the color of people he found on it, he went on to make racial slurs about smoking crack and speaking ebonics. Its really unfortunate that there are some republicans that fit the stereotypical "republicans are racists" stereotype. Please do not judge all republicans by the words and actions of a few like "Fierce Allegiance"."

LOL, I'm not even necessarily a republican! I generally vote that way, though.

a good man like Rudy Giuliani

LMAO! He blows off his son's highschool graduation, he cheats on his second wife with his now third wife, he learned about his daughters acceptance to harvard from a newspaper, and you still call him a good guy? Sure speaks volumes about a fr poster named zook.

The piercing (I think that's what it was) was what startled me.

Is that what that was?

I have nothing against Rudy personally.

But I do not want him as President.

Therefore, I debate to that end.

I find it much harder to win a debate when sidetracked with all of the other extraneous BS.

I suspect that people who didn't support Rudy will be the first to squeal about Hillary being in the White House.
