Campaign for Dark Skies (CfDS.org) ^ | 8-5-06 | J. Appleton Light Pollution At the beginning of the 21st century, humanity is losing a valuable and beautiful part of its heritage. For the first time in history, poorly designed and badly aimed lighting is denying vast numbers of humanity a view of the night sky. Urban sky glow now pollutes nearly all of Britain's night skies. As amateur astronomers we have a responsibility to guard our night time environment against light pollution. I am NOT a liberal, I'm a conservative, but I'm also an astronomer, we need dark skies, and lights ought to be aimed DOWN, now OUT at night, so the more lights they shut off in cities, the happier I'll be about it. So, I can agree with dark skies. If people want to light up their front porches at night, they ought light up their front porches, but not MY front porch.

You use a lot less energy, and money, sending the light to where you need it to go than you do when you also send it where you don't need it to go. Cities are just now catching onto this fact but from the money angle more than anything else.
