Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

The anchor on FNC said that she has Stage 4 cancer and that Edwards is not suspending his campaign.

I got snookered too. Early on, Drudge was reporting Edwards would suspend his campaign, which would be honorable; family before personal ambition. Rueters is now reporting Edwards being quoted as: "The campaign goes on strongly."

I thought Stage IV cancer is terminal, didn't know that it was treatable at that point.

Treatment is targeted to slow the progress of the disease.

Good for him.

His campaign didn't have a prayer, but he and his wife have my prayers.

I can't believe Edwards is continuing with the cancer spread to her bones.

Sympathy votes count, too..

Truly awful, it need not be repeated how awful cancer is--but bone cancer is, well...

thoughts and prayers for her health.

Yes, some do, some don't. I think it depends on the situation. However, for example, if a soldier chooses to continue to perform his duties in spite of personal issues in his family, I highly doubt people would be accusing him/her of being selfish, etc.

Prolonging her life is critical at this stage.

Her children need her for as long as possible.

Politico published on the rumor. Edwards decided to 'carry on.' He is one selfish creep!

Given the treatment she's going to need, I don't see how she can possibly campaign at all with him.

It's my understanding that each round of chemo/radiation is less successful.

She looks like she has lost weight. Maybe intentional, but you have to wonder if it's the cancer.

They just said that the cancer has spread to the bone. It sounds very, very bad. Bone cancer is so painful.

Well, considering that John Edwards hired those two virulently anti-Catholic bloggers, maybe it isn't odd his wife would be a proud and very open member of Democratic Underground. It surprised me, though, because he wants to be a national contender. If you have ever witnessed firsthand the degree of truly deranged hatred, vileness, fury, abject ignorance and all around puerility on DU, perhaps you would find it just a shade surprising too.

Please, please, please refrain from saying asinine things that justify every caricature of conservatives.

Agreed. While I disgree with him on everything, I feel no personal ill will toward him.

Prayers for the whole Edwards family.

I feel sorry for her, because the prognosis is not good. Once breast cancer has spread to the bone, it's probably spread to other organs as well, and the outcome is rarely good.

What is so amazing is that we were all praising John for suspending or ending his campaign at this time of personal family crisis.

But, he's doing no such thing. Instead he created a publicity stunt to further his campaign and the media is lapping it up. It's not family first. It's John first.

Disgusting, especially since the diagnosis was not just a return of cancer to the breast or lymph nodes.

I have sympathy for his wife, but John is a cad.

I think he predicted it would happen five years ago on a cable access show in Texas.
