Edwards to Suspend Campaign (Update: Wife's cancer has returned - Does not suspend Campaign)
The Politico ^ | March 22, 2007 | Ben Smith

Posted on 03/22/2007 8:23:49 AM PDT by kddid

John Edwards is suspending his campaign for President, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, an Edwards friend told The Politico.

"At a minimum he's going to suspend" the campaign, the source said. "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It’ll be another couple of days before there’s complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," said the friend.

As for the campaign, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

Sincerest prayers for the Edward's family.

After a courageous battle of 7 years, I lost my mom to this in 1979 when she was 52 years old.

Look, whether or not the campaign is suspended, this is terrible. Perhaps SHE wants the campaign to continue, so that she can be productive, or perhaps they are that calculating. Either way, as decent people, we should pray for them to be well (not be elected) and if so compelled, pass those good vibes on to the Edwards family.

I'll still give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while. They may well be in denial at this point.

On the other hand, he has milked the sympathy vote on numerous other occasions.

God bless Elizabeth. Bone cancer can be terribly painful.

I can't believe Edwards is continuing with the cancer spread to her bones.

Unreal.

Actually Chena, I think we do.

We do? Are you saying that when our military men and women are going through personal strife we allow them to quit their jobs? Surely not.

After the initial statement, it was one big campaign commercial.

I'm not so sure his poll numbers will go up. I think a lot of women will look at his continuance of the campaign as a selfish move. It's almost as if he said: "I am continuing with my campaign. Oh! and by the way, my wife has terminal cancer."

Damn that is too bad. What doctor would treat anyone associated with this parasite though?

I lost my beloved wife to this killer so I do feel for the guy and his family.

Having gone down this road it is something I would not wish on my worst enemy.

I got that feeling too. If this was about his wife, it would have happened last night or earlier this morning. He's an opportunist and he'll leverage this for more media time.
That said, cancer is evil and she'll need all the help she can get, too bad her husband is too self centered to see that.
