This should apply to retiree pay as well.

I always thought it odd for the government to give X dollars and then take back some percentage of it.

Where this will be bad, of course, is if they pay scale would understandably be lessened, but then to have a national sales tax implemented.

Then we should at least pay our military something close to what they would make as a civilian. For a meezley 1k a month, we should either pay them more or pay them tax free.

If I were starting out again as a young ensign, newly commissioned, with a wife and sea duty I'd be bringing home about $40,000 per year. How much more would you pay me?

As for the 18 year old fresh out of boot camp, he's an E-2 making around $18,000 per year with his food, housing, and medical taken care of. What entry level civilian job is going to do better than that?

Uhhh military pay should already be tax free ... who the 'f' taxes our heros that protect our nation day in and day out ... oh yea... democrats.

And Republicans. The article says that this isn't the first time the suggestion has been raised, just the first under the Democrat congress. That means that the other times it went nowhere when the Republicans were running the show.

I could get behind this for the military, but ...

You can be sure that in short order, the government unions would begin to lobby the dems to "treat all US government employees equally." The pressure to make all government employees tax exempt would be irresistible. We would have tax exempt government employees, advocating raising taxes on civilians.

That was the poop that the Air Force fed me when I was a young E-2. At that time - 1992 - I was making about $11,000 per year. I can tell you that I would have happily given up the barracks and the chow hall (excuse me, dining facility) for an extra $10k per year.

By the time I was an E-4 I was making a whole $14k per year. My "pay visibility statement" told me I was making $29k. Pffffftttt!

Cops. Firemen. And surely our military should be paid better than first responders.

If nothing else enlisted pay should be tax free.

Why? All federal employees pay should be tax free. What is the point in wasting millions of dollars paying people and collecting the money back? They should just pro-rate salaries and have people claim other income!

I was an E-3 in '82, started saving $250 a month at the time; took home about $650...all about priorities...

I saved as well. Not withstanding my ability to save, more money would have been nice. How much more would you have been able to save if you had income parity with the civilian world?

A rookie police officer for Kansas City makes about $1300 more, has to be 21 and is usually a college graduate, and pays for housing, insurance, and food. Taken into consideration an E-2 isn't that badly paid at all.

I know what you mean, but there are those who guard the castle walls and those who leave the castle walls to go and fight on the field. I believe it should be as widespread as possible except for the whiny desk jockeys. Full disclosure: I am a member of the National Guard.

"Then get a job that pays you to do that."

I did. So did a lot of other young enlisted members. That is why retention is/was in the toilet.
