White House hopeful Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) will not seek reelection next year as his 30-year-old son prepares to mount a race for his fathers seat.
Duncan D. Hunter, the lawmakers son, confirmed late Tuesday that the 110th Congress will be his fathers last. The younger Hunter, who is working on his fathers presidential campaign, is in Washington this week.
Rep. Hunters office confirmed his retirement from Congress. My understanding is yes. Congressman Hunter does not intend to run for two offices simultaneously and presently does not intend to seek reelection in the 52nd congressional district, said spokesman Joe Kasper.
Hunter is the only lawmaker running for president who has announced his retirement from Congress.
Until 2005, Duncan D. Hunter was in the U.S. Marine Corps. About a month ago, he says, he moved to Lakeside, an unincorporated area of San Diego. Before that, he lived in Oklahoma, Virginia, Camp Pendleton and Iraq twice.
Once out of the Marines, he says, he moved to Idaho for a year to build homes. Hunter added that he went to high school in San Diego, and graduated from San Diego State University.
Hunter says he will soon formally announce his candidacy, but not on April Fools Day. Not April 1 of course, he said, laughing. Maybe a day after.

While I don't normally like for electoral office to be passed down like an inheritance, I think that in this case, Duncan Duane Hunter would be the best choice.
Sam for Governor of CA!
That's certain. But he's been there for a long time. I think he's doing the right thing.
America runs on Duncan.
Duncan's son has a good profile. We should be able to hold the House seat, unless Rinold decides to engage in more Post-Partisan antics and endorse the Dem candidate.
Ah, a double dose of reality! :-)
What an ignorant statement. Duncan would win in a landslide, as he usually does.
Another clueless Duncan-bashing, Newbie-for-Rudy poster.
In a landslide!
What brand are you smokin ?
Thank you for your opinion. It will be given all the consideration due a 2-day newbie.
Not that I'm in the district, but I'll never vote for another legacy candidate. It's just too un-American to have posts going from father to son, regardless of the fact that the post is won in an election.
What? ... you haven't seen his poll numbers come election time have you?
All I can think is that you misworded your post, or your a troll?
Thanks for the ping
You are so correct, Duncan would definitely win his
Dist. in a landslide.
He is very much respected here.
This shows that Duncan Hunter is SERIOUS about running for POTUS, but most of us already knew that.
He is my rep.
And he damn well would win again no question.
And I WILL vote for his son if that ends up being the case.
