FWIW, the answer is basically yes. The carbon (and the oxygen) in CO2 can be of different isotopes. They have the same basic chemical interactions but different masses, and therefore possibly different physical effects. So, anyhow, 'natural' CO2 from, say, volcanic eruptions tends to be of the heavier 14C variety whereas hydrocarbon fuel emissions tend to be of the lighter 12C variety. This is basically because plants have a preference for lighter isotopes.

The bricks between AlGore's ears are the heavier than Rosie O'Donnell.

I'll say one thing about the weight of CO2, It's much heavier than the weight of algore's brain.

just heard AlGore say that natural CO2, such as CO2 produced by volcanos, is heavier than CO2 produced by man.

I can't stop laughing.

Yea those special man made carbon and oxygen atoms eat too much Burger King just like Al Gore thus they are chubbier than volcano CO2 molecules.

Har, har, har.

One atom of carbon and 2 atoms of oxygen weigh the same no matter the source. Gore is an IDIOT!

He may be talking about volumes of CO2 related to temperatures, to which he is too stupid to have any business attempting such things that are beyond the scope of his panic-monger brain.

Only if he's saying man-made C02 is made up of Carbon-14 isotopes whereas nature's C02 is made from Carbon-12 ... Which I really, really doubt this is the case.
Sounds like something he made up.
What's the difference anyways? Carbon-dating methods getting screwed up or something?

Before the volcano comment about 'heavy' volcano CO2 precipitating out, he said that scientists can tell the difference between 'natural' and 'manmade' CO2.

Holy Crap.

Such nonsense.

CO2 is CO2

the only possible way for 1 to be heavier than the other is if one has a higher carbon 14 to carbon 12 ratio than the other.

SUCH CRAP.

Isn't that a bit like asking which weighs more: 100 pounds of feathers or 100 pounds of cement?

May be Professor Gore can explain to us if man made CO2 has a molecular weight MW greater than 44 (extreme sarcasm).

I think he actually is correct, BUT, big BUT, it is irrelevant. I seem to remember the isotopic form of oxygen in the surface hydrosphere (processed by biological organisms) is enriched in the lighter varient, whereas the oxygen from earth's interior has more of the heavy isotopic form of oxygen. It is a useful phenomena to "fingerprint" where CO2 comes from, but it has ZERO influence on its greenhouse gas properties.

I guess he's saying that CO2 from volcanoes has more of the carbon-13 radioisotope of carbon.

Carbon has an atomic number of 6, meaning all carbon atoms have 6 protons in their nucleus.

Neutrons are the glue that hold the positively-charged protons together. Most carbon atoms have 6 neutrons for an atomic mass of 12, but some carbon atoms have 7 neutrons for an atomic mass of 13.

Whatever the amount of carbon-13 atoms in volcano gases, it's not much. Carbon-13 has less than 1% of the abundance of carbon-12, so in the real world it doesn't mean a thing.

I saw the beginning of the anti-globalwarming rebuttal to Gore's film.

It says the basis premise is wrong, CO2 does not cause global warming, that global warming increases CO2.

I hope I understood that correctly.

The only possible explanation for this would be the differences between carbon-12, carbon-13, and carbon-14 atoms. The ratios of these are used in the radiocarbon dating process.

The extra proton would make carbon-14 a bit heavier than a carbon-13 atom. I can hardly imagine that difference could be measured though.

Also, since C-14 results initially from cosmic rays, I don't see how natural versus man-made CO2 would have any differences in the ratios anyway.

Man-made CO2 comes from burning carbon compounds that have been in the ground for millions of years. It's almost all carbon 12.

Natural CO2 contains carbon 14 that is created in the atmosphere by radiation from space, which would be heavier.

CO2 is, by definition, Carbon Dioxide, one carbon atom for two oxygen atoms. As the weight of oxygen and carbon atoms is what it is, and the composition of CO2 is what it is, there's no way "artificial" CO2 weighs more than "natural."
