AlGore - Natural CO2 is heavier than man-made CO2. Is this true?

Posted on 03/21/2007 10:31:06 AM PDT by rrr51

I was listening to the hearings and just heard AlGore say that natural CO2, such as CO2 produced by volcanos, is heavier than CO2 produced by man. Did I hear right? Is that what he said? Is it true? Does anybody know?

Certainly can't think of any reason for that to be true. He may be maintaining that CO2 may have more of certain isotopes, e.g., C14 vs. C12 or O18 vs. O16, depending on it's genesis.

If true, exactly what the consequences would be is beyond me. The troposphere is so turbulent that very little settling takes place, so the horizontal distribution would hardly be affected. The interaction with infrared radiation would be slightly shifted, because it depends on the mass of molecules, as well as the electronic bonds.

I truly fail to see the relevance.

I guess I'd have to see his comments in context.

I read that volcanos release heavy metals along with the release of CO2 - maybe that's wher Algore got it. After all heavy is in the sentence, therefore he just inferred the rest.

Why not? we deserve a good laugh.

Al Gore is an expert on heavy.

Momma don't let your lawyers grow up to be chemists

What lawyer? You hafta pass the bar exam to be a lawyer. Gore dropped out of law school. He has no post graduate degree that I am award of, unlike W, a Harvard business school graduate.

I watched a NASA segment on Mars last night and they said that a great deal of the Martian atmosphere is made up of CO2. That is why Mars is not able to warm up. Which is it? CO2 makes it hotter, or CO2 makes it cooler? In the 70's the ecos's swore we were entering a new ice age. Which is it?

He said that to give his carbon credits more "weight".

>>>I've never heard that. CO2 is CO2, if it isn't it's something else.

First, we must ponder the definition of 'is'.

The difference in weight -- see #32 for the explanation -- is small but easily detected in a mass spectroscopy lab. A standard way of tracing origins of items. The ratio of 13C to 12C (heavy to light carbon isotopes) distinguishes CO2 of plant or fossil fuel origin from CO2 of geological origin. Scientists also use ratios of heavy to light oxygen to identify sources of gases. And ratios of other isotopes to identify, say, where a rock came from. Archaelogists can sometime pin down a stone tool to a specific source and use that to work out ancient trade routes.

It is the same as to say that per pound he weighs more than me, for his pound is more weighty.

I guess they didn't teach chemistry at divinity school.

Or maybe they do and that was one of the courses that he flunked out of.

I assume that is what he is getting at.

He was referring to the isotopes of carbon that appear in CO2...

Ah, so volcanic CO2. has less C14 so it's heavier than car exhaust CO2

The reason he unplugged his brain at that point was because he didn't want to consider the fact that a cubic meter of volcanic CO2. is hotter than one of car exhaust CO2,  so it's less heavy.
