Bill to Ban Regular Light Bulbs Introduced in [U.S.] House
CNSNews.com ^ | 3/21/07 | Nathan Burchfiel

(CNSNews.com) - A Democratic lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of traditional incandescent light bulbs - which are less energy-efficient, prompting claims that they contribute to "global warming" - one day after a colleague told a press conference that legislating a ban would be a "last choice."

As Cybercast News Service reported last week, Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) held a news conference Wednesday calling for more efficient lighting options, and Manzullo said "the last thing we want to do is force legislation down people's throats."

One day later, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) introduced legislation that would set target dates for certain types of light bulbs to be prohibited for sale in the United States.

Harman calls the bill "an important first step toward making every household, business and public building in America more energy-efficient."

"This legislation, while a small step, could have an enormous impact," she said in a posting on the liberal Huffington Post blog. "And hopefully, it can help transform America into an energy-efficient and energy-independent nation."

An average traditional incandescent bulb based on a filament emits 12-15 lumens per watt (a measurement of the bulb's lighting output.) Harman's bill would require all bulbs to produce 60 lumens-per-watt by January 2012; 90 lumens-per-watt by January 2016; and 120 lumens-per-watt by January 2020.

We can save 10% immediately on energy:

Round up and kick out and KEEP out the illegal intruders.
They use gasoline, and they turn on lights, same as you and me.

Follow the money, folks. Who looks to gain from this? And where will it end? When is the GREEN TAX coming?

Aren't the "efficient lightbulbs" filled with toxic chemicals?

Yes - mercury. Not only that, but if you put them in poorly ventilated fixtures that are typical for incandescent bulbs, they overheat and fail at a far shorter life than the incandescents they replace and can catch on fire. (personal experience on this one)

All this shows is that Harmon is a total moron, and probably an excellent representative of the people who voted for her.

I have both types of bulbs in my ceiling at the office. The "new ones" that are rated with the same output as the standard bulb are much dimmer.

Amazing that otherwise intelligent politicians buy into this thinking they can stop global something or other, but they give it some reality in society it doesn't otherwise have and it will live on all the longer even while earth slips back into a little ice age in a few years.

We will be living like Osama Bin Laden in caves sooner than we thought, and the Radical Islam guys won't have done it- The Democrats will have done it to us.

What about the small intense reading lamps I have near my bed or desk?

I propose a bill that would limit the size of a congressman's house to 4000 sq feet with 4 bedrooms and a two car garage that will hold no vehicle longer than an average 4-door sedan. Now that would save energy.

I like the new ones but I'm aware that they aren't as bright as advertised. Mine are 26 watt, advertised at 100 watt brightness but are actually closer to 60 watts in luminescence .

However they do appear to have a long life which offsets the cost a bit.

If you read the instructions, you would know you're not supposed to use CFLs in enclosed fixtures, with dimmers, photocells, and so on unless specifically mentioned. Overheating and failing is highly unusual, though it does happen. I've used plenty of CFLs "out of spec" with no problems.

The fact that they aren't listed for use in enclosed fixtures makes any legislation of the sort idiotic. Not only is it against the market, it would effectively be legislating against millions of existing light fixtures.

"Aren't the "efficient lightbulbs" filled with toxic chemicals? And incandescent are only in a vacuum?"

Yes and no...

Modern incandescent bulbs are filled with argon these days. They get hotter than they used to you might have noticed. This is because the gas conducts heat from the filament to the glass.

This is stupid. The new compact flourescent bulbs are no good in refrigerators and ovens, and don't fit in many older fixtures. Also, they don't come on to full brightness instantly, like incandescent bulbs.

In addition, the unit cost is more per bulb, so this will be a hardship for many elderly forced to live on what the government feels they should live on.

I use the new compact fluorescent bulbs in the fixtures where they fit and which are turned on for long periods of time.

This is an example of typical liberal feel good legislation which doesn't solve any problem, which causes other problems, and which costs people money.

The government that prevented us from buying a toilet that really flushes now wants to dictate what kind of light bulbs we can buy.

You can easily get by with a 100 watt equivalent where normally only a 60 watt traditional bulb could be used

I'm replacing all my 60 watt old bulbs with 100 watt florescents. They're brighter, don't produce the high heat, will last longer, and cost less in the long run. Did have to get used to the 1/4 to 1/2 second delay after turning on the switch.
