(CNSNews.com) - A Democratic lawmaker has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of traditional incandescent light bulbs - which are less energy-efficient, prompting claims that they contribute to "global warming" - one day after a colleague told a press conference that legislating a ban would be a "last choice."
As Cybercast News Service reported last week, Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) held a news conference Wednesday calling for more efficient lighting options, and Manzullo said "the last thing we want to do is force legislation down people's throats."
One day later, Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) introduced legislation that would set target dates for certain types of light bulbs to be prohibited for sale in the United States.
Harman calls the bill "an important first step toward making every household, business and public building in America more energy-efficient."
"This legislation, while a small step, could have an enormous impact," she said in a posting on the liberal Huffington Post blog. "And hopefully, it can help transform America into an energy-efficient and energy-independent nation."
An average traditional incandescent bulb based on a filament emits 12-15 lumens per watt (a measurement of the bulb's lighting output.) Harman's bill would require all bulbs to produce 60 lumens-per-watt by January 2012; 90 lumens-per-watt by January 2016; and 120 lumens-per-watt by January 2020.

Do you think this person has any idea what fluorescent light bulbs do when used around rotating machinery?
They DIM? They may work but in an either on or off mode. I thought that fluorescents produced light from the ionized gas which is either in an ionized state or not; a binary state. There may be enough current through a dimmer switch to fire the gas into an ionized state, but not t modify the output except for off.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

3. Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb with a dimmer switch?
To use a compact fluorescent bulb on a dimmer switch, you must buy a bulb that's specifically made to work with dimmers (check the package). GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the GE Longlife Plus Soft White Energy Saving Bulb) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches. We don't recommend using regular compact fluorescent bulbs with dimming switches, since this can shorten bulb life. (Using a regular compact fluorescent bulb with a dimmer will also nullify the bulb's warranty.)

This is not true. I have 26 outdoor lights around the parameter of my house. I live in Idaho and often we go weeks at zero or below. I switched all of them to mini fluorescent almost 10 years ago. There has never been a problem with them starting.
BTW, I've only had to change them twice in 10 years. (I changed all 26 each time, even the ones that are still working)
My outdoor lighting bill went from $1.04 a day to $.17 a day. Of course the bulbs cost more, but I buy them at Home Depot when they are on sale.
Here is why this is REALLY happening.
Regular light bulbs can now be bought for 25 CENTS each thanks to overseas manufacturing.
Compact florecents cost no less than 4 DOLLARS.

Practical LED lights have really only been around since 1989 or so. Give it another few years and the kinks will be worked out on the quality of light side.
The quality is improving fast. Interestingly, that's only happening because of massive JAPANESE government support.
It's going to happen whether there is a law or not.
