A majority of respondents to a Crain's online poll agree with columnist Alair Townsend, who wrote in this week's issue that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani doesn't have the temperament to be an effective president.
Ms. Townsend wrote that, while she had voted for the former mayor three times, she would not be casting a fourth vote for him, criticizing his "stick-in-your-eye" style. Ms. Townsend said that his strong personality would not translate well when it comes to dealing with international leaders and Congress.
About 70% of the 784 respondents to the Crain's poll agree that Mr. Giuliani's argumentative temperament makes him a poor candidate for the White House.
"Rudy does not have the ability to work with others. It is his way or no way," wrote poll respondent Elaine Walsh. "The decisions he made as mayor were not in the best interests of New York City and on Sept. 10, 2001, his days were numbered and he was leaving with a poor record."
Another respondent worries that Mr. Giuliani's aggressive demeanor would do little to bring about much-needed change in Washington.
"If there's one thing we should have learned from the current administration, it's the tragic risks we face when our leaders fail to listen to divergent views," wrote Bill Melville, in survey comments. "For the sake of the nation, we need to get as far from the 'my way or the highway' thinking we're now mired in as possible. Unfortunately, Rudy won't get us there."
About 30% of respondents say that Mr. Giuliani's style would be well-suited for the White House.
"Apparently the ultra liberals are running this poll and feel that Mayor Giuliani is not the man," wrote poll respondent Joseph DiMauro. "I feel differently because he knows how to make decisions in a very hard world filled with tough people."
The results come after a poll earlier this month showed a majority of respondents were concerned about comments made by Mr. Giuliani's son. Fifty-three percent of respondents to that poll said the statements, which revealed an estranged father-son relationship, would renew concerns about Mr. Giuliani's personal life and could damage his presidential ambitions.
Cliton was supposed to be a joke because of his bad, overly long speech at the previous democrat convention. It was a joke on the talk show circuit.
I didn't know it was a joke. You gave no indication that it was.
"1. Only he can beat rudy"
Should really say "only he can beat hillary"
But with his record, rudy is actually his own worst enemy.
That's pretty weak FB, especially since you aren't putting your neck out for a candidate.
Giuliani has a record, you may attempt to pick it apart but it is admired by a lot of American voters - and from the articles I've been reading and posting, not by the left.
"That's pretty weak FB, especially since you aren't putting your neck out for a candidate. "
Neither has Rush, or tom delay, or thomas sowell or most other people I've heard who have experience with politics. They all say they're waiting for a candidate and it's too early to support one candidate.
"Giuliani has a record, you may attempt to pick it apart but it is admired by a lot of American voters - and from the articles I've been reading and posting, not by the left."
He is admired by a lot of american voters because it's all image and name recognition now. Polls have been posted here that most GOP voters don't know his real record on guns and abortion and they don't support a candidate who is anti gun or pro abortion. THAT is what is going to come out in the next several months about rudy.
The left hated nixon too - even though many of the things he did coincided with their political beliefs. The left even hates democrats when they don't do exactly what they want. Who they disapprove of doesn't prove anything about how conservative a candidate is or how well he'd govern the country and protect the constitution.
No. It is not all image. Your honesty in debating falls apart when you say things like that. And name recognition is important, you can't deny it isn't. You will keep repeating the same things over and over and over again. I understand that is your position. It isn't mine.
Hunter is unelectable. First, he is a card carrying member of most dysfunctional, spendthrift Congress in memory, and rather than using the Republican majority to advocate meaningful reform, he represents the status quo, business as usual, bribe the voters with their own money, wink and a nod, cozy up to the lobbyist kind of Congressman that the voters overwhelmingly rejected last fall. Second, if Hunter obtains any kind of name recoginition outside of Free Republic, the MSM will portray him as Duke Cunningham's evil twin.
Ha! Great stuff!
We're talking about the presidency, not congress.
I know that. I am just trying to get the Rudy worshipers to answer me.
I have put questions to them for days and get no responses.
Ever.
Unless you really worship Rudy and accept him with blind faith, you get no response.
Rudy is not my guy and no one will give me answers.
THAT is another reason to not go for Rudy.
"No. It is not all image."
It is when it's 21 months from the general election. More people can tell you who their favorite american idol contestant is than can tell you what rudy's real record is on guns or abortion or CFR.
Do you actually believe all the people in the polls that cite rudy as a front runner have an in depth knowledge of his positions? Or are they taking the names of people they recognize and choosing the one they have the best current impression of?
If you have even the slightest experience with polls and politics you'd know the answer. If you don't, see this link:

"One-third of voters take issue with a presidential candidate who supports gun control or has been married three times like Rudy Giuliani, a new Time magazine poll shows.......30 percent couldn't back a candidate who favors gun control, while another 35 percent have trouble with someone with three marriages. That includes 48 percent of "born-again" white Christians. But the survey also shows 56 percent don't know Giuliani's marital history, 68 percent don't know his stand on gun control (he's been saying it's a state matter), and nearly 80 percent don't accurately know where he is on abortion rights (he favors it)"
There have been other polls that report the same thing. People don't know the substance right now, they know the name and their perceptions they have in their head. That's a fact.
Which is more important? What you believe about this, or what those gunowners in the purple states that we'd need to get out to the polls believe? Give them a reason to think there's no difference between our guy and the democrat and they'll stay home.
Even worse, if Algore gets the Democrat nomination, he'd outpoll Rudy by a wide margin with those people.
Sure does:
An anonymous poster CANNOT annoit anyone. While I believe Rudy is going to be impossible to beat given the field I STILL cannot "annoint" him.
Just what do you think an annointment is anyway?
Flash won't have a good word to say about ANYONE with even a slight chance of winning the presidency. Anyone with such a possibility would HAVE to be a sellout since they would appeal to the 98% of the voters who differ from the self-appointed guardians of conservatism.
And s/he didn't call you a "hypocrit" but just said she would reveal your hypocrisy. In some out-of-the-way corner of the Universe that might even make sense.
"Flash won't have a good word to say about ANYONE with even a slight chance of winning the presidency."
Really? You've followed my every post and know what I've said about fred thompson?
Why don't you enlighten me then since you know all my posts about the subject.
