I realize a scout should not be alone with a scout leader.

In this case, those who have informed the public since he disappeared have repeatedly explained that the entire group was together, having just finished eating lunch, when Michael wandered off. They had returned from their hike from which Michael and the scout leader abstained.

So the broken rule...if this account is correct that makes it appear a rule was broken...did not cause or allow Michael to go missing. He went missing after leaving the entire group that had just eaten together.

It's fairly easy to lose someone in our forests, and our vegetation is MUCH less dense than yours

Someone who keeps their head and has some knowledge of the mountains can generally walk out of any area here within 24 hours. The creeks are like roads. Follow them downstream and you'll hit a trail or road someplace along the way likely that day. But if you're not certain stay put. Also if you're staying put stay far enough away from streams so you can hear. I can take you into an area where you could walk in circles for days though. It's an area called Catossa. No pattern to the ridges whatsoever.

"Follow them downstream and you'll hit a trail or road someplace along the way likely that day."

Just be mindful of the waterfalls.

The name of the dog that found the missing Boy Scout is Gandalf. ;-)

Just be mindful of the waterfalls.

True and by all means stay out of the streams period. Those rocks are very, very, slick and a good place to get hurt if you're trying to walk out. Anybody who trout fishes in those streams will tell you so.

Our pack is blessed with incredible parents. In five years, I've never had a situation where we were less than 5 deep.

My oldest just became a Boy Scout last week but the Troop is connected to the Pack so we should be equally blessed. We have our first overnighter this weekend.

It's to a science center for the Archeology MB

Absolutely, especially in our steep terrain. But for a kid or someone not familiar with the back country, the best advice is stay put.

I think the park ranger spokeswoman said his rank was webelo

So, he wasn't a Boy Scout, he was a Cubbie?

Agreed.. Walking out is advisable only for experienced hikers who have a general idea of where they are.

They appear to be good parents. Maybe everyone should respect their decision to medicate and mind their own business.

I made an agonizing decision to medicate my son after 5 years of resisting. From one year to the next, he went from a child who hated reading to being the top reader in the school. He was in special ed for a writing disability, and is now in four advanced placement classes. It is pretty arrogant for people to denigrate someone else's decisions.

He's a boy in the woods. 'nuf said.

No need for "ADHD" or other excuses.
Odd that some don't understand being restless, inquisitive, and following one's own path is normal for boys. You might be surprised how many boys are secretly jealous of his adventure.

Do we know FOR CERTAIN that the child ate lunch with the rest of the group, or was it only after the rest of the group returned and ate, that Michael was noticed as missing?? That is a question that I have not had cleared up for me. If, in fact, the group had returned to where they were all together eating and then Michael wandered off, why even mention the part about he and the leader having been separated from the rest of the group? The group returning and eating with Michael in their presence would have made the anecdote about the sleeping-in totally irrelevent, and useless to make note of. That's why I suspect that, yes, the group returned, but not necessarily with Michael in their midst. If you have reliable evidence to the contrary, then I humbly yield to your more complete knowledge.

I couldn't have said it better Mom. The parent who doesn't have to make a difficult decision regarding their child is lucky - or uninvolved/uncaring. These people who can pass judgment on such limited knowledge of the situation never cease to amaze me. I wish I could live life so perfectly.

With the MSM,
there is nothing for certain.
They report stories

as if they're written
by really bad AI 'bots.
We're all just guessing.

The more you write, the more you validate my comment.
"Know it alls" like you usually turn out to be losers in real life.
In fact, that you put the "cost to the taxpayers" ahead of the joy of the moment just reinforces that you have no life.

There are some twelve-year-olds who are grown men, six feet tall and 165 pounds of muscle and fully stocked with hormones. But some of them are still children. My boy is 12, light-boned, and still a child in his body, his emotions, and his interests. The boy who went missing looked in his photos as if he were the same type.
