Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) leads Arizona Senator John McCain (R) by eighteen points in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Giuliani now attracts support from 33% of those likely to vote in a Republican Primary. That’s consistent with his level of support for three of the past four weeks, but down from a spike to 37% last week.
McCain slipped another point last week and is supported by just 15% of those surveyed. That is the lowest level of support measured so far for a man recently was presumed to be the frontrunner for the nomination. Thirteen percent (13%) now support former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) while 10% prefer former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R). No other Republican attracts more than 2% support at this time.
Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays.
Among the 31% of Likely Primary voters who identify themselves as Very Conservative, Gingrich has a statistically insignificant lead over Giuliani. Romney is third among the Very Conservative while McCain is fourth.
Those who identify themselves as Somewhat Conservative prefer Giuliani over McCain by a 37% to 17% margin. Among political moderates in the GOP, 42% say they would vote for Giuliani, 20% for McCain, and 6% for Romney.
A separate survey found that 50% of all Americans voters would definitely vote against Gingrich if he is on the general election ballot. Just 20% would definitely vote for him.
Giuliani is the only candidate in either party who more people would definitely vote for than against. He also currently leads all Democrats in General Election match-ups. This includes Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, Governor Bill Richardson, and Senator Joe Biden.
McCain is essentially even with Clinton, Obama, and Edwards while leading Richardson and Biden.
Romney trails Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. Other GOP hopefuls also trail Democrats in General Election polling.
The current survey is based upon national telephone interviews with 599 Likely Republican Primary Voters conducted March 12-15, 2007. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Youd swear that with all the excitement for thompson, you'd think tom coburn was running in the race.
Thompson was a moderate to conservative senator. He's basically a bush clone in the senate, he just speaks better. And all this talk about him sweeping the nomination seems a tad presumptious. Nobody really knows who he is, he'd likely start out at the same spot as a lot of the tier 2 candidates. Lets not forget most of the talent and money is being locked up by rudy romney and mccain.
First Thompson will have to announce and that needs to be yesterday. Every day he waits makes it more difficult for him. IF he announces, which I am doubtful about, he would have a shot at winning a few primaries but there will be no upsurge of support.
You keep confusing your wishes with objective realities. In six or seven months you will be still making excuses as to why no conservative can gain any traction.
Howard Dean NEVER had any significant lead. That campaign was hot air from day one and I, for one, told anyone who would listen that he would not be the candidate. There will be no comparable media conclave which decides to take Giuliani down as there was with Dean. He has neutralized it and become teflon like as was Reagan.
This Dean remark is totally common coming from those terrified by Rudy and totally false to boot.
Nope. We're talking about the most liberal city in the U.S., the city that leads in abortions, a city that holds harsh restrictions on the 2nd Amendment rights of its citizens, a city that holds annual homosexual parades and a city that offers safe haven to illegal border invaders.
Yes it is. Romney just got a big whopper money tycoon in Florida today. Most of the candidates need to raise a ton to run. If Fred wants in he better say so soon. The same with Newt. That's why I'm convinced that its all talk to get media attention. Helps in their careers. And there is nothing wrong with that.
We agree as do almost all those supporting Giuliani. It is not US who are stamping our feet, clinching our hands and claiming we will NOT support the nominee unless it is blah, blah, blah. WE are not the danger here.
Thompson is a good man and I have always like him. I think he is taking off more than he can crew should he decide to make a run for it but there is no doubt that there is a need for a major conservative candidate. Newt is DOA for most of the electorate unfortunately.
Can't refute what I have said? Cuteness doesn't do it.
No need to refute your comments. You are full of crap.
Why does the title have Newt at 10% when the article says 13?
Yep. Newt always has been dead. People remember both his inability to whip Clinton and his own personal problems. That's a bad combination. We will take EITHER a flawed winner, or a virtuous loser, but not a flawed loser :)
An error in the title I believe. I didn't want to change the title without the Admin Moderators permission.
They have to change it for you and they only will if the person who posted it asks them. Hit abuse and let them know.
Newt's problems really result from our inability to fight the Treason Media. It still runs rampant over the Truth as the fact that it converted an amazing victory in Iraq into a defeat in the minds of the sheeple.
Prior to the invasion the Treason Media was dolefully warning of the thousands of casualties in the first few days. Didn't happen. Then it IGNORES the discovery of an entirely UNKNOWN nuclear weapons research program run for Saddam in Libya.
If this war had occurred under a Democrat it would have been reported as an incredible success and one of the greatest military victories in history. We would have been reminded over and over that three times as many men were killed PRACTICING for D-Day than in four years of war in Iraq rather than sanctimoniously reporting EVERY death one by one.
Frankly I don't know how ANY Republicans ever get elected anywhere given the complete bias of the media.
"You are full of crap." Do you kiss your mother with a mouth like that?
You're right, and the resurgence of the drive-by media, despite their steadily declining viewer/readership/circulation numbers and falling stock prices shows them for what they are: fully subsidized 24-hour propaganda organs of the DNC.
Those who identify themselves as Somewhat Conservative prefer Giuliani over McCain by a 37% to 17% margin. Among political moderates in the GOP, 42% say they would vote for Giuliani, 20% for McCain, and 6% for Romney"
When has Fred every marched in a gay pride parade with NAMBLA or stated homosexual was good and normal?
Tell us, areafiftyone, do you agree with Giuliani that homosexuality is good and normal?
And, no, Thompson hasn't filed lawsuits on behalf of illegals trying to skirt the law:
When Congress enacted immigration reform laws that forbade local governments from barring employees from cooperating with the INS, Mayor Rudy Giuliani filed suit against the feds in 1997. He was rebuffed by two lower courts, which ruled that the sanctuary order amounted to special treatment for illegal aliens and were nothing more than an unlawful effort to flaunt federal enforcement efforts against illegal aliens. In January 2000, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal, but Giuliani vowed to ignore the law.
One thing to note...okay, two things.
Firstly, where did those words from Rudy on illegal immigration come from?
Secondly, considering the fact that he's running for President...why should I trust his words when they contradict his record? Isn't that an example of "pandering"?
Why is it significant? Because he is -- right now anyone -- perceived as a likeable liberal, how does that make him any more useful to conservatives?
You have to pretty dense to think a liberal of either party is going to beneficial to conservatives.
Because if they started doing that, Giuliani wouldn't be the frontrunner for long and drive-by media and many of these pollsters want to give the illusion that Rudy is inevitable nominee.
