Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani keeps the upper hand in a prospective United States presidential contest, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 49 per cent of respondents would vote for the Republican in 2008, while 41 per cent would support Democratic New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Support for Giuliani fell by three points since late February, while backing for Rodham Clinton went down by two points. In another match-up, Giuliani has a seven-point lead over former North Carolina senator John Edwards.

Common tactics of the Rudy Brigadiers:

1. "Remember 9/11!"

2. He's the only one who can beat Hillary! And you know if Hillary were elected, we would have a pro-gay, anti-gun, blue state, lib...

3. "Remember 9/11!"

4. Rudy's tough! I mean, he sent the Polizei out against a bunch of squeegee men!

5. "Remember 9/11!"

6. Rudy has a great understanding of foreign policy. After all, he learned everything about the Middle East from Norman Podhoretz, and has attended Cholo festivals in Queens.

7. "Remember 9/11!"

8. Only Paleos and nutjobs can oppose a man of such solid moral and intellectual fiber as the Lawyer from Lawn Guyland!

9. "Remember 9/11!"

10. He's just like Reagan, only better. Reagan was married twice, but Rudy jumped the broom THREE TIMES!

I know alot of freepers are gravitating towards Fred Thompson - and that's fine, he seems like a good person.

But at some point, people need to start focusing on electability. And I so far cannot see how Thompson is going to be able to do as well as Bush did in 2004. Which Kerry/Gore state is Thompson going to be able to flip? Put Richardson on the Dem ticket, and the Dems will flip NM, NV and CO. All states that Bush won narowly, that have high hispanic concentrations as well as ex-California residents. That's 19 EVs. That would put Thompson's at 267, even WITH Ohio. And Ohio is hardly a lock for a republican candidate.

What I am saying is, if we go with a "straight ticket" litmus test pure conservative, who is unlikely to flip any Dem states, the strategy for electoral victory in the 2008 general election is extremely narrow.

where are you reading that in any polls? For example, both Obama and Hillary would crush Romney right now.

The polls right now are a familiarity contest. The ones that matter right now are among GOP activists. This is the primary, not the general elections. Whoever wins the nominations from both sides will be known the world over.

Obama has magic. He'll just say "Obamacadabra" and *poof* the problem disappears.
