More brands added to pet food recall
STREETSVILLE, Ontario, March 19 (UPI) -- Pet food manufacturer Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario, has added seven brands to its list of potentially dangerous pet foods.
The manufacturer issued a recall "cuts and gravy"-style cat and dog food brands including Americas Choice, Iams and President's Choice sold at stores across North America after it was revealed that the foods may contribute to kidney failure and death in cats and dogs, ABC News reported Monday.
At least 10 pet deaths have been linked to the recalled foods.
"It's very possible other companies will have to add to this recall," said Louise Murray, director of medicine for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "People need to keep updating themselves."
Kevin Whalen, spokesman for retailer PETCO, said the store has removed multiple foods, including some that were not listed in the recall, to be "extra careful."
"If it was even possible that certain pet food would be involved, we wanted to be safe," he said.

Actually we do the same. I have a Tortie Point Himalayan " Miss Betty " that only like albacore warm out of the can.
My hubby adores her and gives her her way 2 times a week. She just eats a little bit with juice. He takes the left over and feeds wild critters in back of the office complex he works. HAAAAA. He even likes raccoons and other creatures.
You aren't nuts, if you are, we are too. Staying away from that cuts and gravy is a good idea. Lost my Norwegian Forest cat 2 years ago. I was nuts for him. He talked.
By the way, all of ours are over 13. We have 4 left. Our family that still resides with us!
My girl Sarah eats everything on her plate - vegetables, meat, desserts. She doesn't like lettuce or canned pudding or raspberry anything. But that's it - anything else is good stuff.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced that as a precautionary measure, it is voluntarily withdrawing its 5.3 ounce Mighty Dog® brand pouch products that were produced by Menu Foods, Inc. from December 3, 2006 through March 14, 2007. This withdrawal is in response to the recall initiated earlier today by Menu Foods, a contract manufacturer that does limited business with Purina as well as with other pet food manufacturers. Only Mighty Dog 5.3 ounce pouch products are being withdrawn by Nestlé Purina, including those pouches contained in multi-packs. Importantly, no Mighty Dog canned products, or any other Purina products are affected by Menu’s recall.
Whatever. It's a cat.
Thirty seconds research on Google confirms that ricin is unlikely to be the culprit.
Overreaction to statistics my be closer to the truth. It this really an epidemic, or just business as usual? Do we really know the background rate of pet death?
And it looks like it needs a home.
IF MenuFoods is correct and the problem is the wheat gluten, what about people food? Gluten is added to almost every bread on the grocery shelves as well as being in some canned and frozen foods. I want to know more about the company supplying the gluten and who else is on their customer list besides pet foods. Hmmmm.
I'll mail him to you if you like. I warn you that if you let him in the house, he barfs on the furniture. Mostly he just kills things. Squirrels, mice, bluebirds, etc. Of course, he tortures them first. Especially chipmunks. He can make a chipmunk last for a few hours. Of course, he has lost a lot of fights in his life so he is pretty chewed up. A wino found him in a dumpster and gave him to my daughter when she was two. So he's 11 now.
He's really not our cat. He belongs to himself. We just get to feed him. But he's a cat, not a baby.
I feel really sorry for both you and your cat. Somehow I KNEW you offer to send him to me. I can't or I would - our cat (a girl) is so miserable about other cats that we can't even think about getting another one, though I would love to.
Just remember that chocolate is toxic to dogs.

Thanks much for this info. My cat eats Purina Complete. Now I don't have to worry. Nothing about Fancy Feast anywhere, is there? He eats that, too.

Thanks. I just looked in my truck and saw that I have Pedigree in there that I use when driving around and see stray dogs that look hungry. Yes, yes...I stop and feed them.

My dogs eat DURA-LIFE dry kibble. I called their 800 # this AM and the recording said that NONE of their dry products were involved.
I don't get what could be in wheat gluten that could cause this. How about botulism?
Some years ago, cubed hay fed to horses killed a bunch, including high $$$$ breeding horses. Turned out to be a couple of rabbits caught up in the cutting process and got cubed with the rest of the alfalfa. It was devastating.
Guess our Pug is ok as we feed Alpo. If I read this right it is only the wet type food and not the dry.
