Giuliani backtracks on smoking comment (smoke Nazi)

A day after he implied that Ireland should not follow New York City’s example and pass a ban on smoking in all workplaces, Rudolph Giuliani called Mayor Michael Bloomberg to say that was not what he meant.

Bloomberg said the former mayor told him that he meant that Ireland, which currently has no smoking restrictions, should begin to restrict smoking slowly, rather than all at once.

“He just thought that sometimes you go partways to get there, let people adjust and then go the rest of the way,” Bloomberg said yesterday.

Giuliani said that it made more sense to restrict smoking to certain areas.

Public licensing laws trump property rights.

Which is the reverse of what it should be in a free society in situations such as this. If I have a bar and I post on the outside that I allow smoking, my customers have the choice to come in the door or not, and my employees have the choice to work there or work somewhere else.

"I am thankful that my state passed strict smoking laws, it helped me quit. All smokers want to quit, they just don't all admit it. "

As a former smoker, I detest your remarks.

Your opinion is that it's a great idea for Big Government to tell us what to do because after all everyone must really want to quit even if they tell you to your face that they don't?

There are a group of people who think they all know better than us what we want or ought to want in every circumstance of life. Last I checked this forum is dedicated to fighting that philosophy.

I quit because I chose to. Since I'm a conservative, I don't think my opinions ought to be enforced on everyone else.

All smokers with half a brain want to quit.

So you're saying you have half a brain?

Public licensing laws trump property rights.

You speak as if this is a good thing.

Public licensing laws are more of a means for the "haves" to limit competetion from the "wanna-haves" in today's America than anything else. And the "haves" had to buy lots of politicians to get there, too. Nanny-statism ain't cheap, you know.

Public licensing laws trump property rights.

Normally, only for cases of scientifically proven causes of health hazards to unknowing customers.

The case against ETS has not be proven, even by a preponderance, much less a majority, of evidence.

It is unfortunate that that "youth elixer" did not work for my Dad, my Granddad or my Father-in-law all dedicated smokers. But maybe the elixer only works if you smoke four or five cigarettes a day rather than 50+.

How do you think your illustrious forebears would have responded to the nanny state mentality of the smoking nazis?

Though I am sure you would prefer just half the story the other half is that any seizure of autos would go before a civil court jury. You likely even know this already.

While I know how desparate the Rudyphobic are to undermine his momentum you still cannot change the facts that the vast majority of the population does not want smokers to be able to impose their smoke on them. Even other smokers don't always like it. This "issue" will not harm Rudy one iota.

I truly do believe that all smokers want to quit, deep down. That is what I believe, that is my opinion. You can detest my opinion all you want -- feel free!

"But I'm starting to get a sick feeling in my stomach now that people are PAYING staffers to post..." Nah, people are speaking their minds they are not being paid.

If that's the case then "show me the money!" Where do I apply. Heck I'll argue your side of the story for the right price (although I still haven't figured out exactly what your side of the story is)

"Are you defending Giuliani's brand of incremental socialism?" Once again, socialism does not outlaw smoking.

Secondly the laws wrt smoking are passed by those most closely monitored by the citizenry, local and state authorities. Have the anti-anti-smoking crowd EVER been able to defeat even ONE anti-smoking politician?

Do you really want a return to the day of smoking in the workplace, in buses, planes, trains, ANYWHERE? Is it a conservative position that Non-smokers have no rights but must justshutupandtakeit?

You are right. The general public, most who are non-smokers don't care about this type of stuff. But most conservatives do. It's the primary, remember.

This "issue" will not harm Rudy one iota.

He'll die of a thousand cuts, then. Self-inflicted.

You see, the core issue is not smoking. It's Giuliani's apparent desire to impose his statist anti-freedom philosophy incrementally...i.e. in a sneaky leftist way.
