Stores Pull Recalled Pet Food Off Shelves

Menu Foods Recall Covers Dozens Of Brands

Stores across the country were pulling containers of pet food from shelves Saturday, after the announcement of a major recall.

Menu Foods has recalled millions of containers of cat and dog food sold at major retailers across North America, including PetSmart and Safeway.

The recall includes 48 different brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food, including Iams Nutro and Eukanuba.

The company says an unknown number of animals have suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food.

However, the company says it doesn't know what's causing the illness.

Menu Foods has set up a recall hotline at (866) 463-6738 or (866) 895-2708 and a Web site at www.menufoods.com/recall.

Pet Owners Worried After Massive Pet Food Recall

Animals Have Kidney Failure

POSTED: 7:23 am PDT March 17, 2007
UPDATED: 3:50 pm PDT March 17, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Pet owners are really worried. Millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America have been recalled.

Recall: Dog Products | Cat Products

Menu Foods said it's recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands, including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

One New Jersey woman became concerned when the four types of Iams products she buys for her cat, Smokey, had vanished from shelves. She said Smokey is very sick and hasn't been eating for days.

In Nebraska, another woman said she sometimes feeds her five cats packets of sliced meat and gravy sold by one of the brands affected. She said her cat, Boots, seems to have lost its appetite in the last few days.

The company said an unknown number of animals have suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food.

The Food and Drug Administration warned pet owners of the massive recall. Menu Foods Inc. ., is recalling 60 million containers of wet pet food.

The Canadian-based manufacturer is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced between Dec. 3 and March 6. The company distributes the products to numerous retailers in the form of cans and pouches and under different brand names.

The products are sold at stores including Wal-Mart, PetSmart, Pet Valu and Kroger.

Officials are warning pet owners to immediately stop feeding the contaminated foods to their pets and said owners should see their pets' veterinarians if they develop signs of kidney failure, including loss of appetite, vomiting or lethargy. The company said they have conducted tests, but are so far unable to locate the source of the contamination.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods Web site at menufoods.com.

Menu Foods Recalls 60 Million Containers Of Wet Food

POSTED: 2:24 pm PDT March 16, 2007

WASHINGTON -- A major manufacturer of dog and cat food is recalling 60 million containers of wet food.

Menu Foods said it's received report of dogs and cats suffering kidney failure after eating the food. About 10 animals died.

Menu Foods supplies store brands to Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger, PetSmart and other retailers. The recall covers its "cuts and gravy" style food sold between early December and March. The food comes in cans and small foil pouches. It consists of chunks of meat in gravy.

The company said it's not sure what happened and product testing hasn't revealed a link that would explain the illnesses and deaths.

Menu Foods didn't immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall but said the information will be on the company's Web site Saturday morning. For more information, contact Menu Foods at 1-866-463-6738.

I know that many conservatives are also pet owners, such as myself. I have listed the Dog Food brands, but there is a list of Cat Food brands as well found at the Menu Foods website. Just the other day on a conservative talk show, Barbara Simpson of KSFO AM in the San Francisco Bay Area, was discussing how the idiots now want to mark products with a “carbon footprint” reading on the product, but how she is concerned about all this meat that is coming from all over the world from China, Mexico, Timbuktu, and the meat product often isn’t marked with the country of origin. There are consequences to this globalist agenda, be it United States Presidents, Republican or Democratic, who will not close the border with Mexico, the consequences of terrorism taking advantage of agendas that serve global business interests, diseases of all sorts that are entering our country because of the massive influx of illegal aliens who are not inspected, trucks in large numbers entering our country from foreign nations who use low-pay foreign nationals as well as hiring drivers from poverty stricken areas such as India, Sri Lanka, and other parts of Asia (Canada is an example of such hires), vegetable products from Mexico which have heavy pesticides, and countless other examples, and we are not being told the full story nor the potential for serious impact to our social network. In this case, it is pet food, but we really don’t know the extent of it or if it is related to meat products from foreign origin. It may turn out this time to not be related to foreign meat products, but I am not sure that if it were actually related to foreign meat products that we would get the entire story. And, this may not be isolated only to Menu Foods line of products and pet food or if in fact some meat designated for human consumption is possibly impacted.

I guess the new buzz word is "carbon footprint". I was just getting adjusted to "gravitas" and "global warming".

I usually feed my beagle pup Purina or Pedigree, so thankfully I don't have to take back the food I just brought her on Thursday.

My local Petco just told me that as far as Nutro brand goes, the recall only applies to "pouches," not the regular dry food.

We never fed our dog the wet food for what that's worth.

That is correct. It is the wet pet foods, the so-called "gravy and meat chunks" sort of food.

http://www.barfworld.com/

If pet owners would "Barf" their animals this stuff would not be a problem. Happier animal - longer lived animal and fewer Vet bills.

Processed "food" is not appropriate for an animal and the stuff they put in it is beyond disgusting.

What did dogs and cats eat before the '50's? Fewer Vet bills? Fewer diseases? Duh.

There are more than a few FReepers who have reported their otherwise healthy Cats have become sick or have died from kidney failure.

I would guess than many of the pets who have died from Kidney failure lately have eaten this food, but it went without notice.

I'm taking my Kitty to the vet, but have to wait till Wednesday.

Thank you! I have two dogs.

We need to make sure that it didn't come from the company who put out all these brands "Menu Foods" (Ontario based).

Iams and Eukanuba were also in the newspaper as pet food that was harmful, which surprised me, as they are SUPPOSED to be the best.

...idiots now want to mark products with a “carbon footprint”.

There is enough markings on our products as it is, not to mention that whole mess may be repeated in one or more languages. In many cases product instructions a pushed in to a corner in fine unreadable text.

Another note. I'm sure these idiots would also want to include a "genetically altered content" as well.

I can hardly wait to see the bureaucracy that controls this. Talk about a carbon footprint.

Yikes! Brian, thanks for this post. My family and I both thank you. I had about five packs of the Nutro Natural Choice wet dog food that I sometimes give my dog for a treat.

One pouch, a few weeks ago, gave her incredible stomach upset and lethargy for a day. I figured it was just because she wasn't used to the change in her diet. She's been back on her dry food and has been her fine, frisky, goofy self.

I wonder if the pouch I'd given her had been one of the tainted kind, and that we really missed a bullet this time?

wet pet foods, the so-called "gravy and meat chunks" sort of food

my bet is that they recently decided on a cheaper or more convenient preservative to use, and it is nephrotoxic......my other bet is that they will NEVER allow the truth to be known to the public

Last night on our local news (Orlando) they mentioned it might have to do with the manufacturers switching to a new and cheaper wheat gluten used in the processing. Not sure if this is factual- but that is part of the specualtion out there...

I feed my two corgis dry food only- they seem to do better all around.

Thank goodness Purina isn't on either list. My dogs are young, but I don't think that my ol' boy cat could handle kidney trouble. I've often thought that a good terrorist plot would be to attack the pet food industry--demoralizing.

I do use the hard food for the puppy but had to worm him for hookworms and use the soft to mix the powder for the worming..He ate it up and loved ever bite of it and seems as frisky as ever..I will mention this to the vet though...and see if the pup needs some testing..
