Federal authorities said a New York man arrested as part of a human trafficking investigation forced a 12-year-old girl to be a sex slave, confining her to a house in New York and transporting her to Connecticut to work up to 12 hours a day as a prostitute.
The case shows that domestic trafficking of U.S. citizens is a concern along with international human trafficking, U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said.
"We are not going to tolerate any type of trafficking here in Connecticut, particularly when children are being exploited in such an egregious manner as we allege here," O'Connor said.
More arrests are expected and authorities said they suspect there are more victims.
Corey "Magnificent" Davis, 35, faces charges of sex trafficking, forced labor, document servitude, kidnapping and transporting minors for immoral purposes.
Shamere "Barbie" McKenzie, 23, of New York, was charged with conspiracy to transport minors for immoral purposes.
"My client is a victim in this situation," said Diane Polan, McKenzie's attorney. She declined further comment.
Telephone messages were left Friday for Davis' attorneys in Connecticut and New York.
In an indictment unsealed Thursday, authorities said Davis was a pimp controlling a group of female prostitutes who he housed in Queens, N.Y. McKenzie was his "bottom," or most trusted prostitute, according to the indictment.
Investigators said Davis recruited two girls and forced them to work as dancers in strip clubs and to perform sex acts for money. They said Davis controlled all aspects of the girls' lives, including regulating their food intake and confiscating their identification documents.
Prosecutors said Davis recruited a 12-year-old girl at an adult club in New York and bought her hair extensions, a manicure, dancing clothes and shoes and fake identification. She worked as a prostitute in Queens and at clubs in Bridgeport, where she worked up to 12 hours per day earning $1,000 that she turned over to Davis and McKenzie, according to the indictment.
The girls were slapped and beaten, threatened and confined to a house in Queens, authorities said. She ran away in May 2005.
A 17-year-old girl was recruited last year with a promise of a cheap apartment, but when she got there Davis took away her cell phone and locked her in the apartment, the indictment says.
Davis one time put a gun in her mouth, the indictment alleges.
The girl worked at "Pleasant Moments" club in Bridgeport and in underground clubs, according to the indictment. She was flown to Dallas, Texas, to engage in prostitution after she turned 18, authorities said.
One of the victims later called a Stratford police officer, who notified federal authorities, O'Connor said.
The girls are receiving care and protection, O'Connor said.
The operation allegedly allowed Davis to lead the high life.
Authorities seized $29,000 in cash, two Mercedes Benz cars, a two-family house in Queens, and jewelry worth $110,000, including a watch with diamond stones, from Davis.
Davis, who has been detained since his arrest in December, faces a maximum term of life in prison if convicted. McKenzie, who was released on $100,000 bond after her arrest in January, faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
The case was investigated by the Smuggling and Trafficking of Persons Investigative Task Force, the FBI, Internal Revenue Service, state and local police.
Ping.
Here's one couple who deserve just that, after due process, of course...
Ah, the pimp lifestyle. But that's okay, a bunch of record companies are making money off of promoting it. Just a normal expression of black culture, right?
I'd like to hear some high-profile black women (such as Condoleeza Rice and Oprah, hopefully finding common ground) speak out against this. These girls are just thrown away. And the thugs that "own" them are turned into heros.
Notably, Bill Cosby does speak out.
They should hang the SOB by his willy.
Whats the minimum age to get in adult club in New York these days, 11?
Whatever punishment these two get, they earned it.The death penalty for them wouldn't trouble me in the least.
The due process and proper form for such cases consists of a tree stump. The stump was split with a wedge down the middle, the perp was forced to sit on it with his appendages in the slot, and...[you already guessed!] ... the wedge was pulled out on him. Such due process was always accompanied by public rejoicing and major festivities. Just think of what a concession for renting benches to the onlookers, or a hot dogs, beer, soda, and ice cream stands would bring!
I suspect that the only thing that the democrat party would have a problem with is that the girl was working a 12 hour shift without union representation.
Oh, he is a devout Muslim. A follower of the religion of peace.
"My client is a victim in this situation," said Diane Polan, McKenzie's attorney. She declined further comment.
Oh pity the poor victim!
The mean man made her do it. Although she had use of a car to transport this minor across state lines.
Of course the mean man had her so scared she could not have driven that car to a police station and sought help for her and the girl.
Of course if this is tried in New York she will probably get off.
I was going to axe THE question, but the word "Magnificent" already answered it for me.
Direct responsibility for young girls being basically raped hundreds or thousands of times...too bad about the whole "cruel and inhumane punishment" prohibition. The ancient Persians had one execution method that is particularly appropriate for crimes of depravity (rape, child molestation, sex slavery) - it is called "scaphism" (look it up). Death is brought about via a combination of dehydration and septic shock, and can take weeks. A video showing various stages of the process should be displayed prior to execution. That would be sufficient to exact justice of the profane variety - he will pine for such softness during his eternity in hell.
Shamere "Barbie" McKenzie? that name alone merits a pic.
Goes right alone with this guy!
