"Cooter" Says Fellow Hazzard Castmates Victims of P.C. "Vigilantes" (You ain't gonna believe this)
Internet movie Database ^ | March 16, 2007 | Hildy

Posted on 03/16/2007 1:55:36 PM PDT by Hildy

A performance by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra featuring John Schneider and Tom Wopat, who appeared in the 1979-85 series The Dukes of Hazzard was canceled after complaints that the series had "racist overtones," according to Ben Jones, who played Cooter on the show and later served two terms as a Georgia Congressman.

"What could these politically correct vigilantes possibly be thinking?" Jones said in a statement, in which he called the cancellation "a dangerous affront to the rights of performing artists and their audiences." Jones particularly criticized the NAACP for endorsing the cancellation. "I'm a life member of the NAACP and proud of it," he said. "Denying an artist an opportunity to entertain an audience because of somebody's wrongheaded political viewpoint is just plain un-American. I have fought for equal rights all of my life, and that is why I am speaking out on this."

Schneider and Wopat were to have headlined a PBS special by the Cincinnati Pops on July 14 titled "Patriotic Broadway."

He was an alcoholic, who was charged with domestic abuse. He also has a poor marital history with multiple divorces.

So you are saying he is a democrat..

Okay, I understand what you are saying. I think when we say these sort of things, we are falling right into that PC trap. Part of the problem is that because a FEW people use the Confederate Flag as a racist symbol, then it must be racist. In any event, it is part of American History. Period. How a person or a group of persons interpret its meaning, then try to force all of us to think like them -- is ridiculous.

We will continue to bend over backwards for the PC police until someday we decide to stand up.

Speechless.

As I am as well. . .gives me great discomfort pondering the ignorance of this; and the omens of ignorance this gives rise to.

Hope those they serve; let them hear. . .know and experience the deserved repercussions of such stupidity.

(. . .and will not hold my breath on that one. . .)

"I'm a life member of the NAACP and proud of it," he said.

Then this reward is richly deserved Mr. Jones.

Where is Opie's mother?

Ask Barney. I'm sure he's hiding something.

I think anyone who interprets a flag to mean anything other than what it was intended is the one with the problem. How long are we going to let a small minority control how we think?

Must be the General Lee... and of course, Dixie!

I understand.. I know that is a touchy subject around here.. I look at it this way.. if you saw a guy with the flag below on his car, your first thought would be 'commie bastard' (I know mine would).. not, gee, I wonder if he is a Russian ex-pat who is remembering the country he grew up in and it's great space program.

This is probably the stupidest statement I have ever read on FreeRepublic.

Calling it probably the stupidest things you've ever seen on Free Republic is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen on Free Reupblic. The person doesn't need your abuse, as he was talking about the NAACP's view of what may REMOTELY be seen as racism, not what is his own.

Geesh! Grow some more skin cells!

Cooter did dis Bill Clinton back in the day. Back when the Clinton communication/destroy opponents machine was in full operation (why oh why doesn't Bush have one of those?) Cooter read the Clinton talking points and advanced them on the talking heads shows, and on his campaign.

When it all was a lie, Cooter fessed up. Said he was pissed at the Clinton admin for making him lie.

The difference with your Russian flag and the Confederate Flag is that the men who died fighting for the Confederacy were just as American as the Union men. Most people in America have no idea about what that was about, and it shows in their interpretation of what the flag signifies. It has become a horribly rewritten history by the government schools.

And before anyone thinks otherwise, I was born and grew up in California, a Union state. General John C. Fremont is a hero of mine, along with General Robert E. Lee.

That was not the way it was attributed. I understand now what was being said, but it was not clear the way it was posted. Maybe the NAACP could also use some history lessons.

..again, I'm not arguing what it really means, I was trying to point out where the racist accusation comes from (wrong in this case..) maybe I'm trying to get too much into psychology when this is going back to the old historical argument.
