This is GOOD news !!!
From Robert Novak:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thompson:
The hype over former Sen. Fred Thompson has some substance to it, as the actor-politician has already begun approaching experienced campaign hands in key states.
Thompson already evokes the obvious comparison to Ronald Reagan because of his profession.
Thompson effectively embraced the Republican right when he ran for and entered the U.S. Senate.
From the perspective of the Republican Party's conservative base, he stacks up well against each of the "Big Three" leading Republican candidates.
His voting record (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 86%) in the Senate is more conservative than that of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain (lifetime ACU rating: 82%), none of his position-switches are nearly as bad or as recent as those of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), and nothing in his background is as negative as that of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R).
Given enough money, Thompson could make a good run at it by tearing down the conservative credentials of the "Big Three" and then building himself up as a tax-cutting, pro-life former senator.
His acting role on "Law & Order" does not hurt, either.
Sounds like he's starting to make some moves .. WOO HOO!
No Tennessean has carried his home state's electoral votes since Andrew Jackson. Can the Republicans afford to cede Tennessee to the 'Rats?
Fred Thompson has the same birthday as Bill Clinton (but is 4 years older). That's the only thing negative I know about him so far...but the Clintonistas are sure to find something to attack him over.
Can you imagine him and Hillary in a debate? How about Obama?I would think that one of his "looks" would wither Hillary and send Obama back home crying to his mama.
Run Fred, run! Please!
No Tennessean has carried his home state's electoral votes since Andrew Jackson. How many candidates does this cover? I'm not sure that Algore counts as a Tennessean. I thought he was brought up in some fancy-pants hotel in Washington while daddy was in the Senate or cozying up to the Commies running the Russian oil companies.
In any case, I think it's about time we rectified this situation!
The illegal immigration issue must be front and center during all of the GOP Presidential Primary Debates as well as during all of the General Presidential Debates! This will separate all of the "pro-enforcement of all of the U.S. immigration laws" Republican Presidential candidates from all of the "pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants" Republican Presidential candidates! The illegal immigration issue as well as each and every problem that's related to illegal immigration is far too important for too many politicians to keep ignoring to this point. Good-bye U.S.A. if more amnesty for illegals happens soon.
I like Fred ok so far, but this list is stupid. Reasons number 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all the same reason slightly reworded. Reason number 10 is crap. Make it three reasons to vote for the guy and cut the nonsense.
To: ssaftler
All of the Tennesseans who served as President (Jackson, Polk, and Andrew Johnson) were born in other states. Polk narrowly lost Tennessee to Henry Clay. Johnson was never elected President (and Tennessee did not vote in the 1864 election).
John Bell of Tennessee did carry his home state in 1860--he was the Constitutional Union candidate and came in fourth in the popular vote, but third in the electoral college. I forgot about him--he was a Tennessean who carried his home state...but unlike Jackson, Polk, A. Johnson, and Gore, he was a native of the state. Fred Thompson was born in Alabama. A Tennessean can't be elected President unless he was born elsewhere.
T&T?
Fred Thompson/Tommy Thompson?
I think he's the best bet. I'd like to see him run.
"10. He is a Tennessean - perhaps the biggest plus of all and sorry y'all...you have to be one to really understand. So was al gore.....;)"
Actually, he wasn't... which is why we rejected him. Vacationing here during summer breaks doesn't count as "being a Tennessean". If you listen to his accent you can tell he is from the north east. Listen to Fred's accent and you can hear a true southerner.
Thompson also touched on immigration, stating the need for America to gain genuine control of her borders, suggesting that once that was accomplished, Americans would continue to embrace immigration as they always have, provided it's legal immigration and on a scale that fuels the economy, while not creating a potential disaster for social services...."
He is far more likable than any of the other candidates. I will say both Hunter and Romney can be charming too though. Even less-known Ron Paul is a very sweet fellow and comes across well in interviews. McStain, Gilmore, Huckabee, well, I just don't get the same warm feeling toward them, having given them plenty of chances over time.
Thompson has a personality that wears well. Very unlike the leftwing ex-mayor or the Hildebeeste. Because of his acting jobs, people do connect with him. And the fact that he plays characters so similar to himself in movies like Hunt for Red October or in Law & Order really helps him. On issues like abortion, his L&O character Arthur Branch is probably the most conservative fictional character in network TV shows. And, as Branch, he's made strong conservative arguments but couched in the language of liberty and an inherent distrust in granting government too much power over the citizenry.
People want to vote for someone they actually like. Reagan was likable in this sense, even if you didn't really buy into all his policy ideas. Say what you will, it's always been true.
Likability gets you the benefit of the doubt at the ballot box and in pushing for policy in office. This is how Reagan managed to go right past a hostile press and past the liberal Rockefeller wing of the party (now foisting Giuliani on us) and speak directly to the public to get support for his policies.
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, indeed...
To: Graymatter
Oh and while I'm glad he's comfortable in his skin, a note from his doctor would be appreciated. Not being a party pooper, but the 'rats are going to bring it up if it helps them or hurts us.
Why don't we get notes from Giuliani's doctor or from McStain's doctors then?
Giuliani has supposedly had a serious prostate cancer, one which has a high chance of resurfacing after five years. And McStain has had two major bouts with melanoma, the only really deadly skin cancer left.
Both McStain and Giuliani have promised to release their medical records. But they haven't done it and they're running around sucking up all this campaign money before releasing those records.
I have a question. I know that Fred Thompson is presently married. Was he divorced or widowed prior to his current marriage?
