Some 9/11 families, FDNY protest Giuliani

Eyewitness News

(New York - WABC, March 14, 2007) - Rudy Giuliani held his first New York City fundraiser on Wednesday night in his not-yet-official bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

But for a man who's banking on his September 11th reputation, there is strong opposition from victims' families and New York firefighters -- and it's getting nasty. Eyewitness News political reporter Dave Evans is in Midtown with the story.

Rudy Giuliani is hoping to raise about $2 million dollars at Wednesday night's fundraiser at the Sheraton in Midtown. But a lot of people are not happy about it and do not see Rudy as a hero from that most tragic time in our city's history.

It is a carefully crafted image: the hero of 9/11, America's mayor. But now the international firefighters union is on the attack.

In November of 2001, firefighters were furious. They accused the mayor of prematurely scaling back the search for remains at ground zero. The union's president last week wrote "the fundamental lack of respect that Giuliani showed is unforgivable."

Peter Gorman, Uniformed Firefighers Officers Association: "It was disrespect for human life, human remains and human dignity. And it was really the straw that broke the camel's back. There were so many issues before 9-11 that speak volume about his failed leadership."

Today in Washington, the union hosted a forum with almost every single candidate for president. John McCain was there, Barack Obama showed up and Hillary Clinton got a huge welcome, after ripping politicians who court firefighters only during a campaign.

"It's great for the photo ops but how about taking care of the people who have taken care of us across our country," Clinton said.

Rudy Giuliani, though, wasn't there. The union at first considered not inviting him. It back tracked. Giuliani then said he'd come, but later changed his mind.

Earlier this week Giuliani said firefighters are his heroes.

"Some tend to be heavily Democratic unions, so you're going to have all kinds of agendas there but it does nothing for my bond with firefighters or what I would do for them if I were president of the United States," Giuliani said.

Despite the flap over firefighters, many 9/11 families still back Giuliani.

Lee Ielpi, 9/11 victim's father: "I think we should look at what Giuliani is capable of doing for the country. He did it for the city before 9/11. He did it for the city after 9/11."

Giuliani held a baseball theme at the Sheraton with popcorn, crackerjacks and hot dogs -- and the backdrop behind the podium looks a like like Yankee Stadium.

>>My point was on whether Peter Gorman's opinions of recovery should be dismissed because of who he may or may not of voted for.

It's not a question of who he voted for. He can vote for anyone he likes.

On the other hand, to use his position to continue his ongoing, longstanding, pre-9/11,rants against Da Mayah, and to try to gain additional gravitas and sympathy by falsely accusing Gulianni of endangering 300+ dead heroes, is unpardonable.

Peter Gorman is a politician?

Is the head of the AFL/CIO a politician? Is the head of any other union a politician?

Yes. The man was elected by the union members and has a definite political agenda. Bring down Rudy for the DIMs.

Nice to see Free Republic becoming an echo chamber for the Lamestream Media.

Why even bother to think? We can have the AFL-CIO do it for us, starting with our health care decisions.

>I'll claim PMS and I won't have to prove temporary insanity.

Oh, I like it. It has a certain panache to it!!!!

Of course, I could make the argument that PMS is a form of temporary insani......

Nooooooo. On second thought, I don't think I'll go there!

Be well, :~)

Peter Gorman and his union cheers Hillary. How many funerals has Hillary for 9/11 Firefighters has she gone to? What in the hell did she ever do for the firefighters?

Alright, I think there are points here.

I apologize. There may have been justifiable reasons for your posts/opinions on what Peter Gorman said.

I'll tell you why this article and accusations by this hack bugs me.

I'm not a fan of Rudy's positions on Gay Marriage, gun-control, immigration, etc...but when someone has the absolute gall to accuse Rudy of dropping the ball during and after 9/11 it get me really pissed!

I saw it with my own eyes how this man rallied the city and supported our President tirelessly. This man honored, as best he could, almost all of the lost firefighters on 9/11. I believe he even gave someone away in marriage that lost their father on that horrific day.

This is how low the Democrat party has sunk. For this scumbag to worship Hillary Clinton over Rudy because of politics is utterly disgusting.

If Bloomberg was mayor at the time, I think all of NY, PA and NJ would have been in mass chaos.

If Giuliani wasn't the speaker he was on that day, I may still have my kids in the basement. (it is a finished basement...but they were down there for about a week).

No need, Calpernia. I've always liked you. The poster of this article has an agenda here and while I am not in Guiliani's camp, I don't hate the man either and I will vote for him if he's the nominee.

Hillary is just so brazen .. her comment: "... after ripping politicians who court firefighters only during a campaign."

Geeeeee .. I believe it was Hillary WHO NEVER ATTENDED ANY FUNERAL OF ANY FIREFIGHTER IN NYC.

Her comments are just so the "projection technique" .. it makes me laugh everytime I she opens her mouth. Here she is actually complaining about her own actions .. and yet she thinks NOBODY WILL NOTICE. We notice Hillary!! And we're not going to allow you to get away with it.

Doesn't everyone have an agenda here? I most certainly do. If not, what is the point in posting?
