Some 9/11 families, FDNY protest Giuliani

Eyewitness News

(New York - WABC, March 14, 2007) - Rudy Giuliani held his first New York City fundraiser on Wednesday night in his not-yet-official bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

But for a man who's banking on his September 11th reputation, there is strong opposition from victims' families and New York firefighters -- and it's getting nasty. Eyewitness News political reporter Dave Evans is in Midtown with the story.

Rudy Giuliani is hoping to raise about $2 million dollars at Wednesday night's fundraiser at the Sheraton in Midtown. But a lot of people are not happy about it and do not see Rudy as a hero from that most tragic time in our city's history.

It is a carefully crafted image: the hero of 9/11, America's mayor. But now the international firefighters union is on the attack.

In November of 2001, firefighters were furious. They accused the mayor of prematurely scaling back the search for remains at ground zero. The union's president last week wrote "the fundamental lack of respect that Giuliani showed is unforgivable."

Peter Gorman, Uniformed Firefighers Officers Association: "It was disrespect for human life, human remains and human dignity. And it was really the straw that broke the camel's back. There were so many issues before 9-11 that speak volume about his failed leadership."

Today in Washington, the union hosted a forum with almost every single candidate for president. John McCain was there, Barack Obama showed up and Hillary Clinton got a huge welcome, after ripping politicians who court firefighters only during a campaign.

"It's great for the photo ops but how about taking care of the people who have taken care of us across our country," Clinton said.

Rudy Giuliani, though, wasn't there. The union at first considered not inviting him. It back tracked. Giuliani then said he'd come, but later changed his mind.

Earlier this week Giuliani said firefighters are his heroes.

"Some tend to be heavily Democratic unions, so you're going to have all kinds of agendas there but it does nothing for my bond with firefighters or what I would do for them if I were president of the United States," Giuliani said.

Despite the flap over firefighters, many 9/11 families still back Giuliani.

Lee Ielpi, 9/11 victim's father: "I think we should look at what Giuliani is capable of doing for the country. He did it for the city before 9/11. He did it for the city after 9/11."

Giuliani held a baseball theme at the Sheraton with popcorn, crackerjacks and hot dogs -- and the backdrop behind the podium looks a like like Yankee Stadium.

But I call bullshit when people are screaming politics over people we all cried over.

You're joking right? You're actually buying into this crap from a old union shill?

Who's using who here, ya big dummy?

Did you know anyone at ground zero? If so, how the hell can you be speaking like this?

>Did you know anyone at ground zero?

Yes, six friends. And when I saw the first tower fall (that's where they worked,) I knew and accepted that they were all dead.

Today, I do not have false hope that they might have lived through that.

My drive today is to elect a president who will find and kill those who directed the hijackers to fly the airplanes into the WTC, not to allow a union thug to promote his own false issues.

The reason, if I remember correctly, why Rudy wanted to scale back the search for remains was that the WTC site was considered dangerous for the amount of people down there. And looking back, Rudy was right. With all of the lawsuits and accusations regarding the air quality, injuries and the like. Rudy wanted a smaller force as not to get too many people hurt.

Don't give me the B.S. that this union hack is trying to pull that Rudy wasn't compassionate. RUDY WENT TO ALMOST EVERY FUNERAL THERE WAS! IT IS A TOTAL LOAD OF B.S.!

p.s. - disclaimer - I am not supporting Rudy for the GOP nomination.

I had no opinion about the recovery time. I do know many that did. I don't hold the recovery time against anyone.

I do hold it against people making political pawns out of the rescue workers and the victims. Everyone had a justifiable emotional view of how it should be handled.

I worked in the World Financial Center for god sakes; this union is despicable.

You and other FReepers are much too smart to get hooked into the Democrat "compassion" thing.

Bring the troops home for "compassion's" sake.....
Give billions in slavery reparations for "compassion's" sake.....
Let all the illegal immigrants stay for "compassion's" sake....

The list is endless.

Dems have ignored facts, truth and logic for years under the banner of compassion.

Everyone knew there were no possible survivors when Rudy called for an end to the search. The union president has hated him for years. Now 300+ dead firefighters have given that hate a false cloak of legitimacy.

Don't fall for it.

I might too, if I had never read Democratic Underground. If you can believe this, you can believe they want the troops to come home because they "care".

Having compassion for lost brothers and having an opinion on how remains are handled is not to be dismissed over speculation of elections.

Name one other politician that went to almost every funeral after 9/11...

I remember why the recovery was scaled back. I don't hold an opinion on that.

I do hold a strong opinion out of it being dismissed for political backings.

Just give me five minutes with him, that's all I ask.

I'm 63, overweight and a couch potato... but I'll still take him any day... and convince a jury it was temporary insanity!

:~)

And you are twisting this back into dems vs. republicans.

My point was on whether Peter Gorman's opinions of recovery should be dismissed because of who he may or may not of voted for.

I am dismissing it because he is a democrat hack. Also, why does his opinion rate higher than the vast majority of people that believe that Rudy did a great job? Because he is the head of a union?

I didn't see anyone rating anything. There is no rating of remorse.
