MERIDA, Mexico — President Bush, seeking to rebuild ties with Mexico, pledged Wednesday to intensify efforts to overhaul U.S. immigration laws and crack down on illegal drug trafficking.

Bush said that he senses there has been a change of attitudes in Congress about updating immigration laws, from skepticism last year to recognition now that changes are in U.S. interests.

"I will work with Congress, members of both political parties, to pass immigration law that will enable us to respect the rule of law -- and at the same time, respect humanity," Bush said in a news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Bush, facing a huge fight within his own party for his immigration plan, called it an important but sensitive issue. "I say important because a good migration law will help both economies and will help the security of both countries," Bush said. "If people can come into our country, for example, on a temporary basis to work, doing jobs Americans aren't doing, they won't have to sneak across the border."

Tell us, rude boy..Back then..did Bush ever spell out what his "comprehensive immigration reform" involved?

Even if I knew the exact details, why should I bother to tell you? Judging from some of the other responses on this thread, you'd disregard the information and vote for Bush a third time.

President Bush, seeking to rebuild ties with Mexico, ... Perhaps President Bush should seek to rebuild his ties with the United States..

Bush gives America the middle finger from his sanctuary in South America!

With our kids dying in his false war, with our economy imploding, with our borders wide open to anything and everything, he promises to import more poverty, disease, ignorance and dependence.

He thinks Americans don't know we already have "guestworker programs", and that those guests never go home and have become a huge financial burden on America.

His plan for the "North American Union" are right on schedule. United States sovereignty means less than nothing to this monster.

My complaint is that soldiers who return home from Iraq seeking entry-level jobs (and many, many of them will do so) will have to stand in line behind natives of another country, here through lawbreaking, and will have their wages depressed and opportunities unavailable.

After risking their lives defending the Idea of America.

Employers like hiring illegals. It's exploitative, and employers like to exploit if they don't have to worry about being arrested and having to wear an orange jumpsuit. It's easier to rob a bank than to hold down an honest job--which is why people rob banks. If it was known that there would be no enforcement of the law, 10-11 million banks a year would be robbed.

You know, I wish Fox would investigate Crawford ranch and the history of the Bush family army of servants. I'll bet there is plenty to learn.

So Bush is celebrating Republican losses in 06. Whoop de do.

It does appear that the number of employers who offer preferential treatment to vets is growing thinner. And when I hear about some reservist who gets the axe for being called-up (a violation of Federal law), I get steamed.

"The US needs to reform immigration."

No, the US needs to start enforcing our existing immigration laws. For once.

"Today, Bush knows that it will be done in a way to benefit the dems."

That's what the Rats believe, but all Bush has to do to prevent it is to veto any "comprehensive immigration reform" bill (code for amnesty).

How do you get your point across to an idiot? Doesn't give a rat's behind about Americans or what we want, seems he wants to be President of the world and that's very scary.

New rule, every President should take an IQ test and pass beyond "moron" level.

"Bush is really losing it. Anyone else counting the days until January 20, 2009?
He is no long representing the majority of Americans!"

I think he's trying for an approval rating of .001%.
Personally, he lost me as a supporter during the last election (which he managed to lose for us, by the way) when he got rid of Rumsfeld the day AFTER the election, and explained he didn't want it to appear he did it for political reasons... well, DUH, GEORGE... you know, if you had done that a few days earlier, it might have just tipped some of those close races in our favor... oh, no... no... don't want to appear, um, politically biased or anything...

ARRRRGGGH. No wonder Americans have taken up sealing the border with their own time, money and hands.

1. either the people complaining didn't vote for Bush, or 2. the people complaining ignored what Bush was saying about "comprehensive immigration reform" as far back as 1999, or 3. the people complaining chose to disregard what Bush was saying and voted for him anyway.

For people considering Guiliani. Substitute:

Guiliani for Bush

"gun control" for "comprehensive immigration reform"

2008 for 1999

Well, I suppose we could have voted for Kerry. Wasn't much choice there. Is it too much to ask that the President of the United States would actually be on our side?? It's like our coach rooting for the other side.

That's not my point. I understand that "the lesser of two evils" is a consideration. I am merely observing that, if one knew of Bush's position on immigration reform, one has to admit that this is not a matter of "betrayal." I think I mentioned earlier on this thread that people are well-entitled to be upset . . . they just shouldn't attribute positions to Bush that he never held. My opinion, naturally.

Migration law? maybe I'll see Mexicans flying in to land on my pond soon. Can I shoot them with my 12 gauge?

"Can I shoot them with my 12 gauge?"

In order to protect the United States and ensure national security, strict border enforcement is crucial. If necessary, that means the use of deadly force to protect the borders. In the case of our private citizens, I wouldn't recommend it -- yet...

President Bush actually said - I am not making this up - "The border should be a uniter, not a divider". Good grief.

Good grief indeed. If true as you say, this is evidence of a mental breakdown. Someone very high up needs to check out that amendment about what to do in the event of the incapacitation of the president.

How soon before illegal aliens are US government employees?

They're already working on US military bases as subcontractors.Numerous stories on FR regarding this, too.

If each illegal brought one barrel of crude with them, our "oil addiction" would be solved.
