MERIDA, Mexico — President Bush, seeking to rebuild ties with Mexico, pledged Wednesday to intensify efforts to overhaul U.S. immigration laws and crack down on illegal drug trafficking.
Bush said that he senses there has been a change of attitudes in Congress about updating immigration laws, from skepticism last year to recognition now that changes are in U.S. interests.
"I will work with Congress, members of both political parties, to pass immigration law that will enable us to respect the rule of law -- and at the same time, respect humanity," Bush said in a news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
Bush, facing a huge fight within his own party for his immigration plan, called it an important but sensitive issue. "I say important because a good migration law will help both economies and will help the security of both countries," Bush said. "If people can come into our country, for example, on a temporary basis to work, doing jobs Americans aren't doing, they won't have to sneak across the border."
Even if I knew the exact details, why should I bother to tell you? Judging from some of the other responses on this thread, you'd disregard the information and vote for Bush a third time.

Employers like hiring illegals. It's exploitative, and employers like to exploit if they don't have to worry about being arrested and having to wear an orange jumpsuit. It's easier to rob a bank than to hold down an honest job--which is why people rob banks. If it was known that there would be no enforcement of the law, 10-11 million banks a year would be robbed.

It does appear that the number of employers who offer preferential treatment to vets is growing thinner. And when I hear about some reservist who gets the axe for being called-up (a violation of Federal law), I get steamed.

Personally, he lost me as a supporter during the last election (which he managed to lose for us, by the way) when he got rid of Rumsfeld the day AFTER the election, and explained he didn't want it to appear he did it for political reasons... well, DUH, GEORGE... you know, if you had done that a few days earlier, it might have just tipped some of those close races in our favor... oh, no... no... don't want to appear, um, politically biased or anything...

Well, I suppose we could have voted for Kerry. Wasn't much choice there. Is it too much to ask that the President of the United States would actually be on our side?? It's like our coach rooting for the other side.
That's not my point. I understand that "the lesser of two evils" is a consideration. I am merely observing that, if one knew of Bush's position on immigration reform, one has to admit that this is not a matter of "betrayal." I think I mentioned earlier on this thread that people are well-entitled to be upset . . . they just shouldn't attribute positions to Bush that he never held. My opinion, naturally.

In order to protect the United States and ensure national security, strict border enforcement is crucial. If necessary, that means the use of deadly force to protect the borders. In the case of our private citizens, I wouldn't recommend it -- yet...
Good grief indeed. If true as you say, this is evidence of a mental breakdown. Someone very high up needs to check out that amendment about what to do in the event of the incapacitation of the president.
