MERIDA, Mexico — President Bush, seeking to rebuild ties with Mexico, pledged Wednesday to intensify efforts to overhaul U.S. immigration laws and crack down on illegal drug trafficking.
Bush said that he senses there has been a change of attitudes in Congress about updating immigration laws, from skepticism last year to recognition now that changes are in U.S. interests.
"I will work with Congress, members of both political parties, to pass immigration law that will enable us to respect the rule of law -- and at the same time, respect humanity," Bush said in a news conference with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
Bush, facing a huge fight within his own party for his immigration plan, called it an important but sensitive issue. "I say important because a good migration law will help both economies and will help the security of both countries," Bush said. "If people can come into our country, for example, on a temporary basis to work, doing jobs Americans aren't doing, they won't have to sneak across the border."
Hmm, as I said before you appeared to be knowledgable but the above statement made me totally rethink. Hunter a one issue candidate? Need to become more informed. I can't believe you said that.
If you chose him to be "one issue", illegal immigration wouldn't be it, it would be the war, or trade issues.
Add to your post the fact that our freeways are overcrowded. Our infrastructure is not built for this invasion. In a few more weeks, add more Mexican trucks for Nafta.

Hunter spoke to a small group of us last night in Northern VA. Our group is involved in immigration issues, which was the main topic of our discussion. I am well aware of Hunter's chairmanship of the House Armed Services Committee and his stands on trade issues, especially with China. However, for better or worse, Hunter is becoming identified with the fence and border security, which will not help him alone if he wants to get the GOP nomination, i.e., he will be perceived as a one issue candidate.
We asked Hunter about legal immigration [about 1 million per year] and whether he would change the current policies. He said that he was not that well-versed about the issue and would have his staff look into it. That was not encouraging. He also was very proud of his efforts to construct the 14 mile fence below San Diego and his co-sponsorship of the 824 mile fence that was approved and funded. The only problem he said was the fact that only 1 and 1/2 miles have been constructed to date. A number of us expressed some skepticism that the Dems and the WH will allow it to be built.
He was also vague about what the House will do about comprehensive immigration reform, just saying most of the Reps will vote against it. When I asked him how he would address the problem of visa overstays, which account for about a third of illegal aliens, and the Visa Wavier Program, he just said that the fence would free up resources from the border. That makes no sense for a number of reasons. Either Hunter is being wary about taking on legal immigration policies because of its political risk or he is not that well versed about the larger issues surrounding immigration. Either way, it was disappointing.
In any event, Hunter is the best out there now in terms of this issue. Tancredo is more knowledgeable on immigration issues, but he is a reluctant candidate, which is why some may shift their support from him to Hunter.

It depends on the audience and his opponents. The fence, border security, and the enforcement first approach are what differentiate him from McCain and Giuliani who are also strong on the war in Iraq and the WOT, but weak on immigration issues. Trade issues are not something that someone makes as a cornerstone of their primary campaign in the GOP. To get noticed during the first debates and separate himself from the rest, Hunter has to come out strong against illegal immigration, be for the fence, and state, as he already has, that he will pardon the two border patrol agents.
Are there more broder guards now, or fewer? (I'm not saying there's enough, mind you, but if you are going to start playing word games, play). As for your confusion about how the legislative process works in a representative democracy, I cannot help you. You appear to think that Bush was running for the position of dictator.
So you regretted voting for Bush as soon as he took office? What was it that did it for you in early 2001, his dragging-the-feet on the snowmobiles in Yellowstone park issue? Or did Sept. 11th, 2001 really turn things around for you?

Guilt trip, maybe. Perhaps people should pay more attention to whom they vote for? People get the government they deserve (de Maistre).
That is one nasty speech. It's as if he represents the Mexican people, not Americans. I'll bet you he fell in love with all the Mexican servants his family had growing up. Gardeners, cooks, nannies etc

According to your own links this is all Bush said about immigration prior to the 2000 election. There is nothing about comprehensive immigration and Ted Kennedy here. Bush conveniently didn't explain his plan for the destruction of our borders and sovereignty.

And yet, there will still have to be something. The ruling elites will need something to distinguish themselves from the rest of those whose pockets they’re busy picking. And so, there will still be illegal immigration in-between serial amnesties that will occur every few years, because the elites will demand ever cheaper baby sitters, gardeners, cooks, cleaning ladies, dog walkers, car washers, etc. The elites’ll show how morally superior they are to us paupers who can’t afford illegal servants, by periodically demanding amnesty for their servants. This will also endear them to the servants. Then, as soon as the newest mass amnesty goes through, they’ll fire their newly legalized servants, and replace them for even less with new illegals. I didn't say I would've preferred Algore or J F'n K, but if I may state the obvious about Dubya, Reagan he ain't.
That photo is a new low for an American president in a foreign country. He looks ridiculous. It's an insult to American citizens, but of course he'd rather be servile to "the citizens of Mexico" than a proud leader of the greatest country the world has ever seen.
It's hard to avoid concluding that he is hell-bent on destroying the United States.
