Fred Thompson Helps Libby

In a move that suggests he's not worried that backing convicted perjurer Lewis "Scooter" Libby will hurt his presidential chances, former Sen. Fred Thompson is planning to host several fundraisers to help the former Cheney aide pay his legal fees.
In fact, allies of Thompson are trying to bring attention to the Law and Order actor/politician's move and call for a presidential pardon as a demonstration that he sticks with friends no matter what the political outcome.
"Give Fred props on the pardon advocacy," says one pal. "And he's raising money for the www.scooterlibby.com defense fund."
Thompson, working with GOP operative Mary Matalin, has helped raise $4 million for the fund so far, and a defense fund organizer today said that the duo is looking to hold more fundraisers in the spring for Libby's conviction appeal; the dates are still being worked out.

The irony here is that Thompson has these "star power" credentials from his various movie and TV roles and, yet, he's the one viable candidate who doesn't come into the whole process looking like it's some political version of "American Idol". I like what he says and I think he's telling the truth. I can't say the same about "Rudy McRomney".

Agreed it's too early for most.
Unfortunately for the first time in history the vast majority of states - 20 and counting, (including big ones like Texas and Calif.) are all rushing to hold common primaries on Feb 5 of 2008.
Thus it is highly probable that both the dem and the Rep candidates will be decided on that day.
Any candidates still in the race in Sept 07 (just six months away) will need to secure many 10s of millions by December 2007 - i.e. in order to wage what will essentially be a nation-wide primary race on Feb 5th

One thing about Thompson, is that since he was in the liberal "Belly of the Beast", Hollywood, is that he knows how the liberals play, he's seen it up close, like Reagan, when he was the head of SAG. That I think gives him an advantage.

This is a great example of what Republicans should do when faced with political machinations from the left...
Unapologetically stand for what's right. And be willing to use all the powers at their disposal to do it.
To: freepertoo
Yep. Me too. I'd like to see more of him. I could get jazzed about his candidacy.

Former sentator from Tennessee. Put Al Gore's old senate seat in the Republican column.
Left the Senate for more honest labor.

I've always liked this guy.
And he can communicate and connect, but he's still tough.
I did not vote for Bush the first time, but I did the second time because we were at war. But for 4 election cycles, I've been underwhelmed by the Republican choice.
Thompson makes me sit up and take notice.

Why would anyone send money to a millionaire. I am sorry that he got himself into some trouble, but come on. I am sick of criminals who are rich getting a free ride. President Clinton got off scott free from his legal costs and now this guy wants a free ride. This is not right.
