The few, the proud among fans of '300'
LATIMES ^ | 03/14/07 | Tony Perry and Robert W. Welkos

To the U.S. Marines serving at Camp Pendleton, there is much to learn from the Spartans, those heroic warriors of ancient Greece whom one might have called "the few, the proud" centuries before the Marine Corps adopted the motto.

In the hit new film "300," Marines see parallels between the current war in Iraq and the film's story, which tells of hopelessly outnumbered Spartans fighting heroically to the death against mighty Persian invaders at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.

There was periodic cheering Monday night at the Regal multiplex in downtown Oceanside, a few blocks from the main gate of Camp Pendleton, where young Marines attended showings of "300" on three screens. Some Marines nodded in recognition at lines in the movie that were familiar from their training — such as when King Leonidas instructs his son that the more troops sweat in training, the less they will bleed in combat.

"When the Spartan officer says that Spartans are all about protecting the guy to the left and right rather than being worried about themselves, that struck a chord," said Pfc. James Lyons, 20. "That's what they tell us all the time."

And I heard that the entire movie was filmed inside a warehouse in Canada.

As West noted, Aristotle thought courage was the most important virtue of all because it makes possible all other virtues.

This bears repeating. Often and loudly. Aristotle was a man of genius and his wisdom rings true all the way from the 3rd century BC.

A vast sadistic empire of Islam seeing total domination and distruction of the west. The parallels are simular as teh vast Persian empire sought to crush the Greeks. Now seeing how Islam has taken over the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, and how political correctness prevents the free world from crushing Islam, there is almost an identical scenario as the US is the only country willing to stop this. Also how so few people understand the gravity of the situation that if free men do not make a stand, they will become slaves of the enemy.

I saw the film yesterday. One the the best since Gladiator.

Yep. No surprise there.

A friend saw it at Miramar and he said they were cheering all through the movie.

God I hope this film helps people remember what the hell it is they are fighting for.

WAKE UP AMERICA

The Theban sacred band that helped in the defeat of Sparta were 150 pairs of male lovers. Not just Sparta practiced this. However it was said of the Spartans that they were so disciplined that unlike the other Greek armies that had homosexual lovers fighting side by side the Spartans could fight at any other Spartans side and be just as heroic due to the discipline they received.

Correction: Although homosexual would not be an accurate term since Spartan males married women later in life.

And libs even say it is virtuous to cause people to wonder about the sexuality of heroes.

Here's what Christine Stansell, (in the New Republic) wrote about The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln, by C.A. Tripp, who claimed that Lincoln "loved" men?...

"[G]ay? Abraham Lincoln? How would you ever know? And why would you ever care? Surely there is no president whose sexuality we less want to think about....Yet the virtue of this little book is to get you wondering

Despite the cries of "out"rage from the left, any Marine that sees this Movie will instantly understand why the Spartans fought the way they did.

There is nothing gay about being a Spartan, they were the originators of the Brotherhood of war.

Didn't the Greeks have three kinds of love? Philos, eros, and agape, IIRC. And the pederasty was of the second variety from what I've read....

Don't miss it. :-) I don't much like action/warfare/horror genre. Still haven't seen the Spiderman or Batman movies. I go for chickflicks.

But I loved this, for the story, the patriotism, the visuals...

On youtube is an interview of Gerard Butler on Japanese TV about The Phantom.
