"A trial opening Monday pits Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, who says illegal immigrants are destroying the quality of life in his small northeastern Pennsylvania city, against the ACLU and Hispanic groups who contend that the new rules are unconstitutional."
"Cesar Perales, president of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, said at a news conference Sunday in Hazleton that most Latinos are in town legally, noting that Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
The ordinance turns neighbor against neighbor, Perales said, because residents who suspect someone is an illegal immigrant can report them to city officials.
"People feel harassed and hassled by this ordinance," he said."

While the supporters (there can be no other term used) of ILLEGAL immigration concoct all sorts of paranoid fantasies about informing on one's neighbors, there are on many on the left (including the same people supporting the illegals) who think that the 'snitch patrol' is a perfectly acceptable way of identifying global warming heretics who drive an SUV or minivan.

Hazleton case to test local laws against illegal immigrants
Bump.
Two illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic were charged in May 2006 with shooting and killing a 29-year-old man, and a 14-year-old boy was arrested for firing a gun at a playground.
"All right, all right: I meant, 'except for the illegal ones that kill people' You happy now?"
Can anyone imagine this kind of lawsuit being brought in the 50's? My mind is boggled.
IF ??? I can personally tell you Barletta is doing what's in the best interests of Hazleton. I live very close to and frequent the town. English is becoming the second language in their schools. And try walking though the Laurel Mall on a Friday...Loads of NON-English speaking gangs. that's right they look like inner city dirt bags. You feel like you're in another country. If the head of the PUERTO RICO union says they're all legal lets see the proof. I'll show my ID, no problem !!! Besides, this has nothing to do with judging weather or not these people have legal status. It has to do with maintaining the standards of employment and housing. DOWN WITH THE MEXICAN INVASION !!!
