Romney says government was wrong in Schiavo case

TAMPA -- He's campaigning hard for support from Republican social conservatives, but presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Saturday he disagreed with the government's intervention in the Terri Schiavo case.

"I think it's probably best to leave these kinds of matters in the hands of the courts," Romney said in a television interview airing today.

I'm actually relieved by this statement. Mitt almost had me fooled, but a skunk can never hide his stink for long. At least his social-consevative impersonation act is finely over. And I had just signed up on his website this weekend.

> Have you read the testimony the court used in determing Terri's "wishes".

I've read quite a lot of the record, and summaries of the evidence and arguments. Not enough to even pretend to be qualified to make the decision one way or the other, though.

I do know that if I was in the condition that I understand Ms Schiavo was in, I would definitely not want to be maintained indefinitely on feeding tubes.

But that's my decision. I can't speak to hers. For better or worse, the courts did.

"The dude is wrong. This WAS the place for government to get involved. Each citizen is precious in God's eyes, regardless of their physical condition, and our government's main job is PROTECTING EACH CITIZEN. I am still extremely sad and angry over Terri Schiavo's murder. >:-("

---I completely agree.Well said.

Think of our Terri often, and when I do I start to cry.

BTW, have you ever heard A Bird in a Barren Cage?

I do know that if I were incapacitated, I'd much rather be in the care of loving parents who would take me out in the sunshine and maybe put a kitten on my lap each day, than in the "care" of an adulterer who keeps me locked up in a room with no sunlight and those thoughts lean mainly toward "Is that b#$#$ dead yet?"

Guess that falls under taking care with respect to whom one marries.

BTW, what have you got against Sony?

The government never should have stepped in and ordered the execution of an innocent woman. Apparently Romney's never heard of the judicial branch of government.

,,,how is leaving it up the the judicial branch keeping government out?

Well, Romney comes across to me as inconsistent. (I have to admit that many of us are "guilty" of this, also.)

If he has actually claimed that the government should be kept out of situations that don't involve it, then that would include a court's decision that Terri Schiavo, for instance, should be starved to death. Likewise, the courts have no business in making decisions on whether homosexuals have the right to "marry".

"I generally think that it's not a good idea for courts to legislate. Nor is it great idea for legislatures to adjudicate in a specific circumstance," "

Read his whole statement... sounds reasonable to me. I don't think that anyone who calls themselves a true conservative can disagree with the stance of "dont' legislate from the bench"

Cheers

I'm glad you opened this thread. The Schiavo case proved that a probate judge has the power of life and death, and is in fact more powerful than the president and the congress. We need to elect a president and legislators who will stand against judicial tyranny.

This is one more illuminating instance of how Romney's words don't match his actions.

It's over for Mitt on this comment, alone.
Same way it was over for Jeb when Terri died in the extremely vicious manner in which she was murdered.
