While he called Gingrich one of the smartest people in American politics, the former New York City mayor said it was premature to say whether he would consider him as a running mate. HMMMMM!! I wonder!

It could be a Rudy/Newt ticket in 2008. I think this fusion ticket would unite the base, and carry us to victory in 2008.

"...the former New York City mayor said it was premature to say whether he would consider him as a running mate." Well, I've said all along that those were the ONLY conditions under which I'd consider voting for Rudy (i.e. if Gingrich was his running mate). From a "ticket balancing" perspective, it's the "match made in heaven". A "Sun-Belt" politician plus a "Frostbite-Belt" pol. A Conservative plus a Liberal.

The whole "Gingrich had an affair while he pursued Clinton" flap is nonsensical.
We all knew Gingrich had an affair back then, he's just clearing the way to announce his candidacy. He wasn't the President, he didn't shirk his responsibilities while having the affair, and he didn't lie about it to a grand jury.`

...and even though I thought Newt was a hypocrite back then (I leaned to the left) this would make the Rudy pill go down a lot easier in '08.

I don't think Newt would be interested in the subordinate position.

"The kiss of death to his candidacy."
I think that actually happened when he decided to run as a Republican.

If he gets nominated, Rudy needs a running mate with good conservative credentials but less baggage. I look for him to choose Huckabee or maybe Brownback.

This might be an OK ticket, but I can see it now...
Rudy/Gingrich vs Hillary/Obama campaing.

Newt as Rudy's running mate? Hardly. Yes, Rudy knows that Newt has a lot to offer, but not on any ticket. Right now, Giuliani is the most popular candidate on either ticket. He's not about to put Newt on the ticket. He will look to someone like Steele or Dole for obvious reasons.

I don't know...
This sounds a bit like Lieberman running with Kerry...
Lieberman was forced to carry Kerry's water by selling his soul and it did him great harm.
I don't see how Newt would fair any better.

Rudy will get all he can handle trying to smooth over his own past. Adding Newt would not be politically wise although Newt IS the brightest guy in politics
