Blackanthem Military News, CAMP STRIKER, Iraq – A combined operation between ground forces and Apache attack helicopters engaged and killed a platoon-sized element of enemy fighters west of the Baghdad International Airport Complex on Iraqi Highway 1 at approximately 9 p.m., March 7.

A patrol from Troop A, 1st Battalion, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division reported enemy tracer fire in the area known as Az-Zaidon. As they moved toward the firing, they detected armed insurgents in an ambush position along both sides of a canal road. A truck was parked nearby.

After clearing the area of friendly forces, the patrol called for close air support from nearby AH-64 Apache attack aircraft.

The helicopter engaged the enemy fighters, killing 12 and destroying the truck, which had an anti-aircraft heavy machine gun mounted in the bed.

Not sure exactly where Az-Zaidon is in Iraq, but it is minus 12 enemies of humanity today.

I would call that a squad, not a platoon.

Typically, a squad would be about a dozen, a platoon would be from 40-50, a company would be about 100-200, battalion from 500-750, brigade around 3000, division of 12,000 to 20,000 and corps of 50,000 to 100,000.

These are generally larger than the typical US organization, and more like the European or Russian model.

In the overall WoT, the US and allied nations have killed perhaps two or three enemy corps worldwide, if you include anyone who has raised arms against us. Wounded and captured held by military or civilian forces and who have had or face criminal trial are beyond estimation.

Yes, but it is a little befuddling in both directions. That is, I try to keep count by estimating enemy killed not just with raw numbers, but by comparing it to military units.

It really changes perspective when you say that instead of killing 150 enemy, that we wiped out an entire company. It puts into perspective how incredibly lethal our people are compared to that ragtag bunch of fanatics.

That is why I left off by noting that in the WoT we have killed between two and three corps of combined enemy. Few nations of the world have armies that large, so it puts into perspective what our forces have done--yet with amazingly low casualties themselves.
