Parents fume over salacious sex lesson
Chicago Tribune ^ | March 10, 2007 | Tracy Dell'Angela

A health teacher made 8th graders read aloud explicit questions about oral sex and masturbation during a sex-education lesson at a suburban school this week, outraging parents who demanded the teacher be disciplined.

The principal at Wolcott School in Thornton said he learned of the lesson early Friday after numerous phone calls from parents and directed the health teacher to apologize to his class for the two-day lesson.

Parents say this apology isn't enough. They plan to attend the Thornton School District board meeting next week to demand that the 27-year-old teacher, Scott Groff, be suspended or fired.

"My daughter brought it to our attention because she was disgusted with it," said Grady Braley, father of a Wolcott 14-year-old. "There's certain things at her age they need to know. But this was a how-to manual."

"It's creepy, and I'd like to know why he's still teaching."

Braley's daughter, Sandi, said she objected to the lesson, but the teacher told her it was part of the school's "human sexuality" curriculum.

"I just felt really uncomfortable talking about this in a class with boys and girls," Sandi Braley said. "I was like, 'Mr. Groff, why do we need to learn this?' He just looked at me and said, 'Calm down, calm down.'"

Even a local organization that is pushing to get more comprehensive sex-education programs into Illinois schools said the material and the way it was taught was "really over the top."

If I had it to do over, my kids would have schooled at home...but they were step kids already middle-school aged, and it's mighty hard to get started with that situation then when Daddy is scared about doing it.

And you're right. It's not all that hard to teach, especially nowadays when there is excellent curriculum available if you just look for it, no matter what your grade level.

I hate this. It is like a big organized plan to break down the natural modesty of girls and boys. This is unbelievable. I'd have been too mortified to ever take these questions home to complain to my parents. It is time for me to check out of this world. And don't stamp my hand because I'm not coming back.

This story makes me sick. I think that schools should merely teach the biological aspects of sex and reproduction and give information on STDs. There should be no information on variant forms of sex. That's it. More and more the only things schools seem to care about are indoctrinating the PC left's agenda. Meanwhile, students have trouble reading, doing math, science, history, and English.

Yes...I remember having (in 5th grade) a very short chat with the school nurse about bodily changes that occur about that time at a Catholic school. I never heard a breath more than that afternoon.

Then, during sophomore year, at a local public high school, we were forced to take Health Class, which had a nice long section on Sex Ed. I was most appalled at the week-long section on contraceptives. However, I was not subjected to THAT. Thankfully.

God save us all...

Everything goes in schools except GOD.

Religion must be taught in schools. Too many parents aren't teaching their children about GOD, or are teaching them the wrong (non-Christian) religion.

"This must be from the How to be a Porn Star 101 curriculum."

Tell me about it. Last time I checked sex ed is meant to teach safe sex, not how to have sex.

I was traveling today so I couldn't respond earlier to the thread. But I read in a publication today that the number one job listed by pedophiles is teacher. It's simple enough to google "news" stories with a state name and the word teacher and watch what comes up. West Virginia alone has paid out over $7 million in the last 7 years to avoid fighting teachers' unions when they let a teacher go for sexual abuse of a student. The way they get rid of them is to write a glowing recommendation, give them some money and then the parents won't know and he/she moves on to the next school and new victims.

"Every Sperm is Sacred?"

LOL, no. Actually it was the part when John Cleese was teaching some bored students about sex by, um, having sex with his babe assistant. The students were much more interested in the rugby match outside. Damn funny scene.

Does that mean the teacher is going to agree to an early withdrawal before this explodes?

And the NEA will protect this degenerate prick to the max because he is what has become of public education.

Are we not to be salt and light in a dark world?

God knows that the world is filled with evil. Heck, you can even get exposed to sexual sin by going to the grocery store.....a women with breast enhancements decides to wear her 3 years old t-shirt (way to small. She is exposing most of her chest to your children.....The young lovers decide to "make-out" in the park in full view of everyone....your neighbors think it is okay to say cuss words loudly in front of your kids....

This is why I continually teach me children about what to look out for and what the bible says. Pray they have their own relationship with the Lord so their convictions are their own. Train your child in the ways in which they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.

I would tell my girls to get up and walk out of a class like this. Even if they risked getting suspended. I would support their decision to do this. I tell them to expect opposition and encourage them to have boldness. They have done this at school and every time they stand up for what they believe in, they grow in their boldness. They are stronger for it! Teach your kids discernment and what to do when they oppose something, that way no matter where they are, or what the circumstances are, they will know what to do!
