The audit by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine

I give a lot of credit to Mr. Fine for exposing this egregious abuse of power. Shame on the FBI for allowing this to go on.

I heard that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who oversees the FBI, discovered that they improperly and, in some cases, illegally failed to turn of the lights when leaving a room empty.

What government agency has not at least pushed the envelope, or outright abused any power it has been given? Our founders were highly suspicious and wary of government and put into place a plan to limit their power. Like another FReeper posted elsewhere, the U.S. Constitution is the original Patriot Act.

The FBI improperly and, in some cases, illegally used the USA Patriot Act...

This was the leading reason NOT to to pass the act in the first place. Anyone who wishes to give the government more power hasn't studied much history or the Founding Principles.

Government can't be trusted with this much power. The sooner we sunset the "patriot" act, the better.

Justice is still completely packed with Clinton-appointed left-wingers, isn't it?

The FBI needs to be watched very closely. We've had earlier warnings about them (Ruby Ridge, Waco, Richard Jewel, Mark Hatfield), but we've not taken them as seriously as we should have. If this police agency is allowed to continue to run roughshod over individual rights, we are all on our way to "1984!"

Just a start. Give it time. Look at the ADA, clean air, endangered species act have grown
to become. Now fast forward 10 years.

If the (un)Patriot Act was such a great thing. Why wasn’t this?

A Blast from the past.

And for extra points. Can anyone give the name of this that DID pass?
