Mitt under attack by own party: Mass. GOP aims to sink prez bid
The Boston Herald ^ | 03/09/2007 | Jessica Heslam

Posted on 03/08/2007 10:48:14 PM PST by JohnSheppard

A Web-based “truth” squad is poised to chase Mitt Romney in an effort to trip him up on the presidential campaign trail - and its members are Republicans from his very own Bay State.

Founded by GOP consultants Holly Robichaud and Ron Vining, the Mass Republicans for Truth plans to launch a nationwide attack on the former governor’s record - including radio and TV ads.

“He’s running for the highest office in the nation and voters need to know the entire record,” said Robichaud. “We can’t elect an unknown quantity to president of the United States.”

The group will post “The Romney Report” on its website on Monday, vowing to expose his flip-flops on a host of key issues, from abortion to taxes to gay rights.

Calling its mission “educational,” the group is one of the controversial political action committees labeled “527s” named after the federal tax exemption that allows them to exist primarily as vehicles to influence elections.

So far, about 40 Massachusetts Republicans, including elected state committee members and activists who have been involved in campaigns for years, have joined Massachusetts Republicans for Truth. Robichaud, a contributor to the Herald’s Monday political briefing, said she would not yet identify the other members. The group’s website goes live Monday.

The website, www.MassRepublicansforTruth.com which is still under construction, promises “The Romney Report” will assess Romney’s performance as governor in several key areas. “Perhaps the answers to these important questions are a secret in some parts of the country, but they certainly are NOT to the Republicans in his ‘home’ State of Massachusetts,” the site says.

This reminds me of the "bucket of crabs" political analogy. Every time one of the crabs climbs to the rim of the bucket the other crabs grab him and pull him back down.

So, given that these are republicans from Massachussetts, is it a good or a bad thing that they don't like Mitt's positions on issues?

I must admit, I like Romney and can very comfortably vote for him at this point. The fact that Massachusettes Republicans may not like him disturbs me not. This could actually be a ctatlyst for him. This unrest from a party that last elected a Republican to the Congress almost twenty years ago (Silvio Conte-R Pittsfield); from a state that elected Studds (pervert) and Franks (you call it); this from a state that persistently annoys us with the likes of that worthless Kennedy. Yes, I should think that this criticism is a badge of honor. Let them flail away. I still like Mitt.

Hey, fair's fair. Mitt didn't bother to lift a finger to help his fellow MA Republicans, and left the state in the lurch to an incompetent Socialist moron named Deval. Don't screw your friends and expect them to support you. They don't owe him a damn thing.

Holly Robichaud and Ron Vining are a joke. They are paid operatives. They both work for Vining Communications which works for Democrats and Republicans....

"I am a seasoned, non-partisan management consultant, who also happens to be a registered Republican." Ron Vining.

Vining Communications has successfully represented a number of candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties in addition to a wide array of clients in the academic, corporate, entertainment, governmental and non-profit sectors.

Indeed.

Romney's dismal record as the Republican leader in Massachusetts

Romney pledged to build the Massachusetts Republican Party, but in fact he did almost nothing. During his tenure there were two elections for the entire Legislature (2004 and 2006). In each election the Republicans lost seats. Republicans now hold the fewest seats in the Legislature since the Civil War.

During the four years of Romney's tenure, the number of registered Republicans in Massachusetts fell by 31,000. During that same period, the Massachusetts Democratic Party gained 30,000. - Boston Globe 11/2/2006

In the 2006 elections, most offices were not even challenged by Republican candidates. In the November general election for the six statewide Massachusetts constitutional offices there were more Green-Rainbow Party candidates on the ballot than Republicans!

The party's slide has been so precipitous that Republicans yesterday did not contest 130 of 200 legislative seats, fielded a challenger in only three of 10 congressional districts, and put up fewer candidates for statewide office (three) than the Green-Rainbow Party (four). - Boston Globe, 11/8/2006

In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign. He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate the day before the general election!

"Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing," said [Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party]. - Boston Globe, 11/8/2006

"Romney arrived on the scene with great promise, but is leaving the Republican Party here in shambles. Not only are the Republicans yielding the governor's office for the first time in 16 years, but registered Republicans have fallen by 31,000 since Romney took office, and their legislative presence is at historic lows. But it worked out fine for him: He is now chasing the prize he really covets, the presidency." - Boston Globe 11/8/2006

"The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday. The cause of death: failed leadership. The party is survived by a few leftover legislators and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists who have been ignored for years. Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow. In lieu of flowers, send messages to New Hampshire Republican voters warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney." - Boston Herald, 11/12/2006

That's a terrific page of info you've assembled. Keep up the good work, because Mitt seems to be the most honest, ethical, and accomplished leader in the '08 race. I'll be voting for him for sure.

You are funny. The worst things you can find or say about Romney are people's opinion of him. No stealing, cheating, swindling, or any crimes.
