Our Ann Coulter Problem (Barf Alert!)
Slate ^ | March 5, 2007 | Jack Shafer

Posted on 03/08/2007 12:27:07 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Ann Coulter shocked nobody last week by calling presidential candidate John Edwards a "faggot" during her appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Here's the YouTube video, as well as the quotation captured by the Associated Press: "I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I—so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards."

It's true that the Democratic Party leaders displayed outrage. The Edwards campaign e-mailed the Coulter news to its supporters, calling her remarks a "shameless display of bigotry." Howard Dean, Democratic National Party chairman, called her statement "hate-filled" and demanded that the Republican candidates for president repudiate it.

The three Republican front-runners did exactly as Dean instructed with such speed that they must maintain 24/7 "Ann Coulter Damage Control Departments."

Okay, Shafer. Stand by your man. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Does it matter? They all did, and they are all cowards to do so. Who will be the true conservative, Reagan-style candidate next year?

All this furor, and for what? If Ann Coulter wanted to take on John Edwards, she should have repeated what I heard her say on the radio back in January. Namely: John Edwards is the moral equivalent of a pornographer because he made himself rich by ruining good men with lies. That actually has some substance and truth. At least, if an uproar had followed, we would have been talking about John Edwards' wrong-doing rather than the "f-word". What conservative wouldn't prefer explaining Edwards' junk science rather than Coulter's joke?

OK Ann, play 'Em as you see 'Em...
Edwards is at best a lower layer of shyster....check how he made his bucks. He should have taken the money and run.
But he's chosen to run a tab at "Hooddoo's Hairdu's"

Suppose this leads us to find out that John Edwards is a homosexual...will that vindicate Ann Coulter, or make her a bigger villain for "outing" him?

Duncan Hunter. Tom Tancredo. Newt Gingrich.

There are choices and no Dem candidate could beat any of them. Unlike the other three that any Dem candidate could beat.

With liberals? Probably a bigger villain. With conservatives? Can't say, though I imagine there would be more view than one on the right. With me? Wouldn't change a thing. Ann Coulter clearly regards it as a joke herself; it would be pure coincidence if it were true.

Okay. I've made it clear that I don't approve of Coulter's comments. I prefer to stand with Malkin, Medved and Hewitt, among many others. But Jumpin' Jesse on a pogo stick, enough, already!

And don't try to pin it on the MSM. FReepers have devoted far more person-hours, a far greater percentage of FR's total output, to the Coulter kerfuffle than CNN, the NYT, the WaPo, MSNBC and the AP combined.

Coulter made a careless and abrasive comment. It wasn't her first and won't be her last. And when the flames of outrage rise to the considerable height of her butt, she'll be nursing her wounds all the way to the bank.

I really don't think the topic needs any more threads. I can't think of anything that could be said that hasn't been. And I'm not preaching from on high -- I'm as guilty of getting sucked into these threads as anyone. But for crying out loud, it's getting incredibly repetitive and boring.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES:

The author is recognizing that Coulter is a conservative who is not afraid of the leftist PC Police. (It's really a Marxist groupthink tactic.)

Coulter must not be allowed to flaunt the standards of PC intimidation that the cultural Marxists have worked so hard to foster as a tool to control the people.

The only "Ann Coulter" problem I can see is that in Italian black stilleto heels (pause: "Ahhhhhh...."), Ann is probably 6'4". Sorry, but a lot of FReepers can compete with that altitude without platforms - lol!

Oh, woe is me...Ann Coulter has damaged the conservative political process because she has given the liberals talking points that allow them to talk about her instead of the very important issues! Oh, what are we going to do?

I ask people: if this is so damned bad, HOW is this any different from what the political process is like under "normal" conditions when Ann doesn't open her mouth? The short answer is: There IS no difference.

Liberals get to choose the terms of discourse, because conservatives LET them. And I am sick of it.

"...At least, if an uproar had followed, we would have been talking about John Edwards' wrong-doing rather than the "f-word". What conservative wouldn't prefer explaining Edwards' junk science rather than Coulter's joke?..."

It makes not one whit of difference. None. Conservatives can make all the valid points they want, and because those valid points do not jibe with the aims and desires of the liberal establishment and media, they are going down the memory hole.

Funny how that works...what on earth ever happened to Harry Reid and his land deals...Gore and his purchase of carbon offsets from his own company...and on and on.

The point is, conservatives play by some dumb ass set of self-imposed Queensbury rules, while liberals are just loving the stupidity.

Conservatives paste a great big "Kick Me" sign on their backs every day. They do it themselves.

Coulter did not call him a faggot. She told us what would happen if she did call him one. Why is that so difficult for everyone to understand???

The power of PC quarantined speech used by propagandists, and fed to an unwitting audience.

Worse yet. What if it turns out that all the Democratic candidates for the presidency (including Obama, Clinton and Gore) are gay?
