U.S. Mint Says Unknown Number of New One Dollar Coins Missing 'In God We Trust' Inscription

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- An unknown number of new George Washington dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions, including "In God We Trust," and made it past inspectors and into circulation, the U.S. Mint said Wednesday.

In this undated photo released by Professional Coin Grading Service, a George Washington dollar coin missing the edge inscription is shown.

The properly struck dollar coins, bearing the likeness of George Washington, are inscribed along the edge with "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the year and mint mark. They went into circulation Feb. 15.

The mint struck 300 million of the coins, which are golden in color and slightly larger and thicker than a quarter.

About half were made in Philadelphia and the rest in Denver. So far the mint has only received reports of error coins coming from Philadelphia, mint spokeswoman Becky Bailey said.

Bailey said it was unknown how many coins didn't have the inscriptions. Ron Guth, president of Professional Coin Grading Service, one of the world's largest coin authentication companies, said he believes that at least 50,000 error coins were put in circulation.

"The first one sold for $600 before everyone knew how common they actually were," he said. "They're going for around $40 to $60 on eBay now, and they'll probably settle in the $50 range."

Well, the '55 Double Die Obverse is unique and valuable because of its rarity. Error Coins from the past, while they certainly exist, are still extremely rare. Lately, however, in only the last 5-10 years, there seems to be a proliferation of unusual coins leaving the mint, despite the enhanced production equipment and safeguards. Look at the price of these Error Dollar coins - so many exist that the price has dropped dramatically...

Are they the size of a quarter? If so, they will be out of circulation in a year.

The post office is the only place this thing will end up just like its predecessors

It's also used on a "high-speed" commuter transit line in South Jersey. The ticket machine takes only coins, so when you put $5 in the change machine, you get dollar bill coins. I usually go to the bank and get the coins first, causing the tellers to scramble amongst themselves to find enough.

You realize you have to be deceased to be on currency, don't you?

Better to not go down THAT road! :)

That was all done deliberately. You can't make these with dies and get them through the intense scrutiny of the quality control of the mint without noticing this.

This was an appeasement to the atheists. They're probably having a ball.

Someone should be fired publically.

The new dollar coin is exactly the same size as the previous Sacajawea version.

The Sacajawea coin was pretty close to the size of the Susan B. Anthony.

Which, itself, was pretty close to the size of a quarter.

I see a pattern here....

Supposedly the "In God We Trust" is on the outside edge. Do you have additional pictures. Someone sent me one in an email, but I can't copy it and post it.

For retailers, the dollar coin and 2 dollar bills are a PIA. No place in a regular cash register to put them.
