U.S. Mint Says Unknown Number of New One Dollar Coins Missing 'In God We Trust' Inscription
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- An unknown number of new George Washington dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions, including "In God We Trust," and made it past inspectors and into circulation, the U.S. Mint said Wednesday.
In this undated photo released by Professional Coin Grading Service, a George Washington dollar coin missing the edge inscription is shown.
The properly struck dollar coins, bearing the likeness of George Washington, are inscribed along the edge with "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the year and mint mark. They went into circulation Feb. 15.
The mint struck 300 million of the coins, which are golden in color and slightly larger and thicker than a quarter.
About half were made in Philadelphia and the rest in Denver. So far the mint has only received reports of error coins coming from Philadelphia, mint spokeswoman Becky Bailey said.
Bailey said it was unknown how many coins didn't have the inscriptions. Ron Guth, president of Professional Coin Grading Service, one of the world's largest coin authentication companies, said he believes that at least 50,000 error coins were put in circulation.
"The first one sold for $600 before everyone knew how common they actually were," he said. "They're going for around $40 to $60 on eBay now, and they'll probably settle in the $50 range."

Hmmm ... 3 rolls at 25 per roll = 75 X $50 a piece = $1875. Nice profit margin there.
Only problem is... in hillary's next speech she'll be saying something like "I'm going to take the profits from 'MaxMax' of Free Republic from those dollar coins sales for the good of the country".
That's ok, I'll be hanging onto these for quite a few years.
And I have a friend who is a collector so all is well in MaxMax land.

As if the Susan B Anthony dollar wasn't bad enough.
Makes you wonder what kind of Braniac is making decisions at the US Mint, doesn't it?
This dollar coin will be much more popular because they are releasing a new one every three months for the next 11 years. That's a lot of free publicity. Plus it will bring attention to each of our former Presidents. For the younger generation in this country that is a good thing.
I love how the media is reporting this. "New US Dollar coins have improper edges."
I got mine on Ebay btw, just as soon as I posted #7 I was flying through
the pages to find rolls that had the (Pay Now) logo.
I love a good deal.

My dad picked up a nice pack of $25 in a roll. I'm impressed with the engraving.
I didn't get a good chance to see the sides though, he wouldn't let me take them out of the roll heheh.
I'm sure all the wording is there though.
On the coins I've used so far the engraving on the coin edges has been there.
I will always believe that these type of incidents are done on purpose. What better way to get people to start using the new coin which in the past has been a miserable failure.
You're looking at it as a collector (or someone merely interested in coins, history, etc.).
My comments were from the perspective of a spender. A coin with George Washington on it, roughly the same size of a quarter, is just a flat out stupid idea.
Coin collectors are apparently figuratively jumping all over this.
There are 300 million Americans compared with ~130 million non-Americans in NAFTA, and the alleged NAU. Furthermore, the American dollar is allegedly widely used in both Canada and Mexico, along with much of the world. Some countries have the American dollar (the AMERICAN dollar) as their sole currency. It would make sense for the EU to make a new currency if they decided on having a single currency. It would not make sense for the NAFTA countries to do so. Additionally, the term American can also be used to refer to things relating to the Americas, so Mexican and Canadian nationalists need not be offended if they had to use the American dollar.
I always thought the on-edge text was a moronic design.
I went to the bank yesterday to get some dollar coins, but the bank had none. They were also out of the Susan Bs and Sacajawejas.
Go to the Post Office and buy some stamps with big bills from an automated machine. The machines return your change using dollar coins.
If they really want the dollar coin to gain traction, they should eliminate the dime and re-size the dollar coin to be a little bigger than the dime. If the coin is the color of gold, it is logical that it would be smaller than a coin of a "lesser" metal.
It's a cool coin, but not sure it is anymore viable than the last iteration.
It is a matter of time before some barking moonbat in cahoots with the ACLU attack the "In God We Trust" being on our money. This event may just provide enough exposure to the inscription to get the ball rolling.
Interesting. So a godless coin or two are going to be worth a mint.
