Rep. Heather Wilson has long been among the most vulnerable Republicans in Congress, eking out wins in a Democratic-leaning New Mexico district because of her independent reputation and persistent campaigning.
She now faces a new challenge to her future as well as her reputation: involvement in a growing political tempest over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys by the Justice Department.
Wilson acknowledged Monday night that last October she contacted then-New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to inquire about the pace of a corruption probe against the state treasurer, a Democrat. But she firmly denied calling to pressure Iglesias to speed the indictment process.
"My call was not about any particular case or person, nor was it motivated by politics or partisanship," Wilson said in a statement. "I did not ask about the timing of any indictments, and I did not tell Mr. Iglesias what course of action I thought he should take or pressure him in any way. The conversation was brief and professional."
Also in the statement, Wilson reiterated she had nothing to do with Iglesias' dismissal.
Iglesias testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that in the Oct. 16 phone call, Wilson pressured him for details about sealed indictments.
"The second she said any question about sealed indictments, red flags went up in my head," Iglesias said. "We cannot talk about indictments until they're made public. We specifically cannot talk about a sealed indictment."
Democrats accuse the Bush administration of firing the prosecutors to make room for Republican allies and using a new provision of the Patriot Act to install new U.S. attorneys without going through the Senate confirmation process.

Dems are on the MARCH......SEARCH AND DESTROY ALL REPUBLICANS!!!
I hope that there's nothing to this. But conservatives should be prepared for the worst, particularly with the massive media bias.
The U.S. Attorneys who are ratting out their fellow Republicans should never have been appointed. We need tough party loyalists (who are also competent, fearless prosecutors) in these positions. It seems to me that Wilson's and Domenici's inquiries into the status of this non-prosecution, while technically perhaps inappropriate or even illegal, were understandable responses to fearful cringing by U.S. Attorneys who were not going after powerful, corrupt Democrats.
They (being the Rabid Anti American Moonbat Domocrat Party)
have only just begun!
Be Vocal folks and point out this hypocrisy loudly and publicly EVERY chance that you get!
ping.
We don't know anything about Iglesias, maybe he is a demorat partisan hack and needed prodding to do his job. It is very strange, however, that there are not very many prosecutions of demorat politicos. Just look at Jefferson, Berger, etc. Where are the prosecutions?
Iglesias is a Republican, a protege of Pete Domenici, who was being groomed to run for elective office.
No more...
My guess is that Iglesias doesn't have the right stuff, that he was hoisted into his career by Republicans desperate to have more Hispanics in such positions. Should be a cautionary tale. Probably won't be.
He has publicly whined that Pete Domenici called to inquire about the pace of a prosecution.
Apparently Iglesias likes to whine. He whined about Heather--but she says she didn't pressure him.
Next he'll say Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell called him.
After a while his phone will quit ringing--except for the collectors, his fifteen minutes will be up.
Please deposit your soul for your next fifteen minutes of fame.
I say there ought to be an inquiry on why there were ballot problems in GOP areas of Wilson's district on election day. Wilson may have been denied a thousand votes.
The Justice Dept has been favorable to the Dems. Remember their announcement of an investigation of Curt Weldon just beofre the election? Weldon had the courage to criticze CLinton on national security. With him gone, the Republicans will be as craven as ever.
Some protege.
"The Justice Dept has been favorable to the Dems."
The Justice Dept. has a lot of Clinton holdovers.
So it was all LEGAL. Great. So where's the scandal?
They are also shooting themselves in the foot/
And I get scoffed at when I point out that we are at war with Lefties.
I am not scoffing. I agree with all my soul.
