Wired Iraqi man triggers scare at L.A. airport

An Iraqi national wearing wires and concealing a magnet inside his rectum triggered a security scare at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday but officials said he posed no apparent threat.

The man, identified by law enforcement officials as Fadhel al-Maliki, 35, set off an alarm during passenger screening at the airport early on Tuesday morning.

A police bomb squad was called to examine what was deemed a suspicious item found during a body cavity search of the man. Local media reports said a magnet was found in his rectum.

"He was secreting these items in a body cavity and that was a great concern because there were also some electric wires associated with that body cavity," Larry Fetters, security director for the Transportation Security Administration at the airport, told reporters.

Maliki, 35, who lives in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was preparing to board a US Airways flight from Los Angeles to Philadelphia.

The flight left without Maliki but with his luggage aboard. It made an unscheduled landing in Las Vegas, where the plane was thoroughly searched but nothing was found, officials said.

Passengers were not evacuated and no flights were disrupted by the incident at Terminal One at Los Angeles airport.

"There never was a threat," Fetter said.

He said police and the FBI were called in from "an abundance of caution" because Maliki was "so bizarre in his behavior."

Do you mean to imply that someone probing the possibilities of bringing down a plane full of innocent infidels and probably is pretty cool with the notion of strapping bombs onto little kids has sense of shame? :o)

No, I'm not implying they have any shame, I continually forget the moral chasm that exists between us and them. However, I am hoping the difference between dreams of all the glory, and the actual nastiness of doing the deed, is enough to disillusion some of the whack jobs on the payroll.

I have a problem with what constitutes "degrading" among such individuals in the world, but perhaps he's capable of embarrassment over not being able to claim "mission accomplished."

It can't be that much of a, um, stretch to go from swiping one's nether regions after toiletting in a desert culture to inserting something up there. Considering other of their culture practices, it may have felt like old times for him to have something in place there.

I gave you a private answer. Here is a public one: no, you should not suspect anything. I don't see you have anything to fear. I would guess your friend is an arab imposter. You will never see an arab handle an animal, much less have one in his house. He certainly wouldn't have it in a mosque. Further, they do not have any show and tell. They have a Imam who can answer all their questions and give advice. Lastly, they would leave anything greasy. You are safe with your friend. Be nice to him.

By the way, welcome to FR yourself.

The interesting thing...when you piece together bits and pieces...the cops took him to a mental eval (thus requiring a judge's order). This would be highly unusual...but I'm guessing that his story isn't ringing true with the cops. While his immigration papers are mostly ok...there was some type of violation...I'm guessing his residence changed and he didn't report it. The bottom line is that they will start to do this...and we may have to get prepared to have body searches of the extreme kind...before boarding. Personally...that would just about convince me to give up flying entirely...and maybe just take the bus or train.

Most psych patients who stick a myriad of objects in places they don't belong are too sick to walk the streets. I guess he was deemed not to be a harm to himself or others and release. You have to ask why the heck was he deemed well enough to enter the US? Do we not even talk to people before the come over here?
