The Libby Travesty
Opinion Journal (Best of the Web ) ^ | 03/05/07 | James Taranto

We won't gainsay the jury's verdict in the Scooter Libby trial--"guilty" on four of five counts on perjury and obstruction of justice in the investigation of the Valerie Plame kerfuffle. Life is too short to immerse oneself in the tedious details of the case. (If you're interested in Libby minutiae, we recommend Tom Maguire.) But it remains a travesty that Libby was ever prosecuted to begin with.

This was a political show trial, and partisans of Joe Wilson will use the guilty verdict to declare vindication. But along the way we learned that virtually all the claims Wilson and his supporters made were false:

The real crime is that some bimbo has enough clout in the CIA to get her unqualified husband sent on a mission to discredit the President of the United States

I think you're making the same mistake Mark Steyn made when he raised a similar point in an article today.

The reality is that the U.S. really didn't give a damn about the Niger angle at all . . . and this "mission" was nothing more than an attempt to make the case to U.N. Security Council members -- primarily Britain and France -- that an invasion of Iraq was necessary/justified. As the U.S. showed, it didn't mean a damn thing to us whether the Security Council bought into this notion or not.

Why else would anyone send some dopey mediocrity like Joe Wilson on a trip of this kind?

Won't this be lovely...

Joe Wilson will hit all the talk shows tonight, and talk about vindication, when the blood all along was on his hands.

I wonder how it feels to send an innocent man to prison on the lies that he's created?

My goodness... how in the hell do these people look at themselves in the mirror?

This "verdict" is why I support giving a drug urinalysis to all buffoons selected to be on "juries."

You sound like a mean-spirited racist. What you suggest would remove most members of the Democrat party from jury duty.

Kangaroo court with sheep herded into a jury box and a pack of hyenas waiting for dinner.

The jerk juror at the microphone today was a perfect example of jury misconduct IMO.

Did you hear that Libby engineered the Marc Rich pardon?

The left will never believe this. It doesn't matter what the vaunted 9 - 11 commission report said or the facts. Pres. Bush lied to the American people and tried to cover it up is their belief. I heard some supposed authority on MSNBC? FoxNews? right before the verdict came in say it, so it must be so. Facts don't mean a thing to liberals.

Yes, that is the real crime, the real travesty. We may say how horrific this prosecution and judgement are, but the real horror is that President Bush has allowed elements in the CIA and Justice Department to stay in place when they are his ideological enemies and work for his downfall. I am as puzzled by President Bush's non-action on this, as I am puzzled by his family's obligations to the Saudi royal family.

It is strange, isn't it, Dr. S? Sort of like karma. The whole Libby-Marc Rich-Clinton pardon connection is just fascinating now. History may repeat itself 8 years later. I wonder if VP Cheney ever questions his decision to have Libby work at the WH.

Did you hear that Libby engineered the Marc Rich pardon?

Actually, it was Jack Quinn.

Marc Rich's socialite ex-wife has donated an estimated $1 million to Democratic causes, including $70,000 to Hillary Clinton's successful Senate campaign and $450,000 to the Clinton presidential library fund. She also lobbied heavily for Marc's pardon. Investigators want to know if Denise's contributions led to a direct quid pro quo exchange for her ex-husband's pardon. Clinton has denied any connection, saying he relied solely on the information provided by Jack Quinn (former White House counsel and Rich's current lawyer) when he was weighing the pardon request.

But, if anybody "engineered" the deal, it was Denise. Recall that she not only "lobbied heavily", she is exceptionally well-endowed...

Yes, the Marc Rich- Scooter Libby connection is actually UNBELIEVABLE, but it's true. As a result, I don't feel sorry for Libby when I think about the outrage of Bill Clinton and the Marc Rich pardon...

Didn't Libby have a role in the Marc Rich pardon as his attorney?
