Hyder back to work at MWR: Banished crew chief David Hyder has returned to the Michael Waltrip Racing shop, working on the cars while under indefinite suspension for the Daytona fuel scandal. NASCAR officials found an illegal fuel additive in Michael Waltrip's car before and after Daytona 500 qualifying Feb. 11, and the sanctioning body subsequently handed down a record $100,000 fine, as well as a 100-point penalty. "In the world outside of these [garage] gates, you're innocent until proven guilty," MWR Vice President Ty Norris said. "That's the world we live in, so we're just trying to figure out, still trying to investigate with all the fervor that we did before to figure out what is going on. He's working on these [No.] 55 cars, getting them set up and going to test at Kentucky." Norris said the investigation is continuing into exactly what the fuel additive was and how it got in the car. He said the team sent 15 different types of substances from its hauler to a lab and all came back as being legal. Norris said NASCAR has told them what chemical was illegal but he said his team was still trying to figure out where it came from. "We haven't been able to find out from anybody who knows anything about that particular type of substance to explain to us how or why that would happen or how or why it would leave a residue," Norris said. Norris also said he didn't believe it ended up helping with the qualifying attempt. "We slowed down a tenth with all of the qualifying oils and everything else," Norris said. "We slowed down the next day. I don't know why anybody thinks that it worked. We don't know what it was, we don't know what it was intended to do and we don't know where it was entered into the system."(SceneDaily.com)(3-10-2007)

Or, it could be something you see only once.

It's hard to tell what long-term impact the TNT broadcast of the Pepsi 400 from Daytona in July will have. But it'll be different, and it'll be interesting to see how it goes over.

The fifth of six races TNT airs this year will be a test case. For all but four minutes per hour, viewers will have live action from the race on their screens at all times, with hybrid styles of commercials -- something TNT calls "branded content" -- notched into a separate box at the bottom right of the screen

The Up arrow is for David Reutimann

Driver banged up his foot in vicious crash at California, but thankfully he came through it otherwise intact.

Down arrow for Carl Edwards No. 99 Ford was a complete non-factor at California, a track where he Edwards has had a consistently excellent Cup history.

Down arrow for Mexico City In the first year, Busch race there had a little bit of buzz about it. Now, it’s largely just a nuisance to teams in foundering series.

Sideways arrow for Garage area health

Let’s hope an off Cup weekend helps ease an epidemic of “The Crud” that followed the sport from Daytona to California.

In my opinion…

Network television hooks up cameras looking at drivers from all kinds of angles and announcers are now “interviewing” drivers during pace laps or just before key late-race restarts. You can follow entire races from one team’s perspective on DirecTV, with a dedicated announcer-reporter-crew focusing only on that one car.

It’s great access for the hard-core fan, but could it go too far?

After David Reutimann wrecked Sunday at California, viewers saw him slumped over for a second. Maybe he had the wind knocked out of him, because he then started trying to get himself out of the car as rescue workers arrived. It was dramatic television, especially when the sound of his team calling for him to get out of the car because it was on fire was added later.

But if Reuitmann had turned out to be seriously hurt, would that have been something we would have wanted to see?

The more technology that’s allowed into the cars, the more pressure there is to show something that’s never been shown before. Are you worried, like I am, that if TV gets footage of somebody who may be seriously injured – or worse – they might not be able to resist the urge to use it?


In which situation was there more obvious peril? The final lap in the Daytona 500, with six to eight cars sliding all over the place? Or late in Sunday’s race at California with “debris” on the track with Jimmie Johnson leading? NASCAR, apparently, believes it was the latter, since that’s the occasion it threw a yellow flag.


Why doesn’t NASCAR just go ahead and change the rule that leaves cars trapped at the tail end of the lead lap when a caution interrupts green-flag pit stops? Just let those cars go around and get behind the leaders and be done with it.


For the life of me, I cannot see how it helps the Busch Series to force teams to take cars to Mexico City in between trips to California and Las Vegas and then have the field full of not only a double handful of Cup drivers but another sprinkling of road-course specialists on top of that.

Ginn Racing is off to a pretty spiffy start, with Mark Martin first in points and Joe Nemechek two-for-two with solid finishes.

Tepid

Roush Fenway Racing got a Busch-Cup sweep from Matt Kenseth at California, but the news wasn’t very encouraging on other teams’ fronts.

Cold

Jeremy Mayfield’s new team at Bill Davis Racing hasn’t made either of the first two races. That’s an awfully deep hole to try to climb out of.

We have a solid betting pool $20 per race for all 36 races. Usually ten of us, sometimes as many as fourteen, and it is a tough league. Betters from Minnesota to Louisiana, to Texas. Settle up every four weeks.

We bet on 8 cars, and get one throughout.

My pix for Vegas: 01, 2, 9, 19, 20, 31, 42 (yes Montoya is going to be one of the big boys, and 48.

Have evolved pretty sophisticated rules over the years, and it does spice up the race until somebody causes a wreck.

ICBW, but if this flies with the sponsors, I'll bet the "notched box" will eventually be on-screen for the other 56 mins. Remember, the ONLY reason for programming is to fill in time between commercials.

Instead of shrinking the screen to make room for commercials, TNT has decided to reshape the screen.

High-definition television screens are wider than they are tall, whereas non-HD sets are primarily square. Letter boxing is used to get a wide-screen effect onto a regular set -- the way some tapes or DVDs are shown with blank areas at the top and bottom.

TNT will use that technique, but push the image to the top of the screen and leave the vacant space at the bottom.

This area will be used for in-race elements such as the scoring ticker that normally runs across the top of the screen, as well as other elements of telemetry. It also will be used to carry advertising -- for instance, a logo might be in the bottom left of the screen for several minutes at a time. The split box on the right will pop up to carry commercials or other content, such as a driver talking about his sponsor if that sponsor also happens to be one of the 12 or so signed up for a telecast.

The difference, said Jeff Behnke, executive producer of Turner Sports, is that even while sponsored content is being aired, the race will remain in the main box. Mike Wells, the director who will work TNT's races, will use the same cameras he'll be using while booth announcers Bill Weber, Wally Dallenbach and Kyle Petty are on air.

I think I can live with TNT's proposal as long as they don't get too obnoxious with the stuff at the bottom of the screen. I suppose they could run ads 100% at the bottom with no race audio...just turn on MRN and off we go!

CAUTIONS TODAY? - Pre-Caution Poole: 18 and a RED Flag, GWC finish??? Throw everything in for cautions today? Gloves, padding, helmets, water bottles...

If I understand what Poole is saying, non-HD TVs will be letterboxed with the picture moved to the top. I wonder if this will increase the horizontal scope of the picture?
I wonder also if HD TVs will lose some of their "height" (verticality?)so as to accommodate all of the stuff on the bottom.
