Suspension Over the 'V-Word'
CROSS RIVER, N.Y. (AP) -- A Westchestr public high school has suspended three girls who disobeyed officials by saying the word ``vagina'' during a reading from the play ``The Vagina Monologues.''
Stay tuned to WCBS 880 on air and online for more on this story from Reporter Catherine Cioffi
Their stand is being applauded by the play's author, Eve Ensler, who said today that the school should be celebrating the three juniors. Ensler asked ``don't we want our children to resist authority when it's not appropriate and wise?''
The students, Megan Reback, Elan Stahl and Hannah Levinson, included the word because, as Reback said ``It wasn't crude and it wasn't inappropriate and it was very real and very pure.''
The excerpt from ``Monologues'' was read Friday night, among various readings at an event sponsored by the literary magazine at John Jay High School in Cross River, part of the Katonah-Lewisboro school district.
Principal Richard Leprine said today that the girls were punished because they disobeyed orders not to say the word ``vagina.'' Leprine said that because the event was open to the community, including children, the word ``vagina'' wasn't appropriate.
I'm just curious...
What do they call it when they are teaching health then? I'm definitely not a lover of the works, but honestly, it's the biological name for it. It's not a "bad" word.
Why were they reading "The Vagina Monologues" at a school event?
Could they also "speak truth to power"? That would be great. [/s]
To prevent duplication, please do not alter the headlines. Thanks.
No, but it's a lot like farting in public.
This is scrappleface right?
Ensler asked "don't we want our children to resist authority when it's not appropriate and wise?"
And more often than not, a High School junior is incapable of determining whether the school authorities are acting wisely.
The authorities are put in place for a reason, if they needed recourse, they should have taken it up with their parents, let parents and teachers settle it.
How hard is that? This country is filled with idiots.
There goes The Penis Prologue.
Until this country makes up its mind to get liberalism and political "correctness" under control, it is just going to get worse.
This is just total liberal lunacy.
"What do they call it when they are teaching health then? "
Time and place determines appropriateness. If there aren't limits, then why not use slang names? I mean, all women have one? And heck, let's throw in some slang for the male parts too... I'm feeling a little left out.
They were gonna have some penis puppetry later in the show, but they couldn't say that word either. Fortunately the actors in that segment used the approved name of cock fighting.
WTF! I don't usually say this but I will in this case.
Lying headline
"they disobeyed orders not to say the word ``vagina.'"
it's about disobeying.
but the small minded media can't understand distinctions like that.
Irrelevant. Children don't get to decide. They were told not to use it, they did anyway, so they pay the price.
Standing by for inevitable lawsuit from toney Westchester.
Ordinarily I might agree, but to have a reading of the Monologues would be stupid in the first place then.
Really? I guess that's why my buddy and I would get funny looks when we would randomly say "penis" out loud in physics class in high school.
This folks, is the ROOT of the problem with liberalism in general today, and with raising children in particular. In today's society, liberals want to grant children all of the rights and responsibilities given to adults. They accept without question that children are wise enough to determine when "it's not appropriate and wise". They want to give them the power and authority to make those decisions, yet shelter them from any consequences when it gets them in trouble.
I find this interesting, as this mindset is a microcosm of liberalism in general.
Now, I am sure we will be treated to a display of the Principal being portrayed as a prudish, power-hungry, overbearing school official.
at least they weren't quoting Ann Coulter - they'd be flogged and keelhauled
